new 700r4 shift cables are the biggest POS ever
The new cables are made by a different manufacturer... in China. They suck. They are absolute trash. Junk. I broke the stock cable when I forgot to remove it from the transmission when pulling the motor. It broke at the shifter, so I had to "hold" it still when I would shift. No big deal, jsut buy a new one right? Well I had to order it, took a week.
I put it on, with lots of obstacles; first it wasn't snapping in place, because the tabs aren't thick enough it would just pull right through. I put screws behind them to help fan them out. Then it would bind up sometimes pushing forward on the shifter (not bad, just annoying). And then the tabs which I had to fan out with the screws broke off under heavy manual shifting (1 to 2). Had to put the stock one back on.
So I took that one back and got a new one. Another week later. No extra charge though. This one was even worse. Same problems as before, and then some. The tabs I noted are thinner than the stock one. Also, the tranny-side plastic thing was not plastic-welded together like the stock one is. After spending about an hour putting it on and adjusting everything and putting the console back in... IT FELL APART. The two pieces seperated. I had to pull it completely back out, and I ended up using a soldering iron to melt them together. Much stronger than before, but I don't know for how long.
I was trying to be as politically correct, but my frustration got the best of me once I found out that this POS was made in China...
Here's a picture of where it seperated, which I eventually melted together. It would pull apart with VERY little force, much like a plastic easter egg does.

I got a new GM part from the dealer 2 years ago, $55. It was US made. Has worked great. And, I remembered to disconnect it before removing the engine/trans.
This is supposed to be a GM part, correct?

I'm not sure if it's a GM part or an off-brand... it had to be ordered and it arrived in a brown box with my name on it at the store for pickup.

I had to spend another $50 to get the "race" heavy duty version which has held up.

I got a piece of metal strapping and bent it in a U-shape and taped it around the broken sleeve. So far so good. I'll see how long this cable lasts me.

It takes about fifteen minutes, and if you're good with your fingers you can even do it without jacking the car up.

All my friends think I'm nuts, because I totally boycott Chinese products. America's biggest mistake was opening trade with them way back when Milhous was in office.
STOP BUYING CHINESE, AND SUPPORT AMERICA (AND CANADA).
This means everything, including those crappy audio products, and shirts, and [China-made] American flags, and Radio Shack products, and nick-nacks, and sneakers, and K-Mart...........
Come on, you can do it.
Do you know that a Chinese firm is bidding to purchase Maytag? This company is as American as apple pie.
Should such things be permitted? Other countries have laws to protect their interests. We don't.
Our Supreme court just voted to ease laws concerning 'eminent domain' Now, your home can be taken, even for PRIVATE profitting. Everything good that is this country is melting away.
BRING OUR TROOPS HOME NOW.

stronger cable?
is there any reason that the shift cables would wear out and break in just a year or two?...i seem to go through them quite a bit...is there any heavy duty shifter cable that is made for the 700-R4?

When you change the cable, you will find that the end-nut may have to be loosened and then slightly repositioned [several times], to get internal tranny mechanism, to align with notches in shift console. My 20-year-old cable was fine, until I gave the car to Sears for new tires.
They overtightened the lug nuts, breaking several.
They placed the jack in the wrong place, bending metal under the fender. The drivers door was effectively forced to remain closed.
They got dirt into the front grease caps, contaminating the bearings.
They used a bump hammer on a rear disc, peening the end of the halfshaft, and cracking the disc and I have a new bearing and seal, but have yet to replace them.
They broke the mechanism in the steering column, that locks a cable that goes to the shift-console. It is now disconnected, or would be locked even when you turn the ignition key.
Sears has a bunch of chimps working in the Auto Department.
This happened at the Staten Island store. Sears Corporation gives nothing but lip service. They are bastards. I am lucky that I got the $2,300 from them. That was only after threatening them with going to the TV news. May they all go and f**k themselves. I also managed to get them to take two tires off the bill.
Yokohamas. Really sticky tires.

I do not recall who made the replacement cable that Sears supplied, in an effort to get me out of their shop; but it was crap with a China label.
Don't you have a GM dealer nearby? The part is cheap enough to not bother with mail-order. My over-priced dealer took less than $35. The part is perfect.
Also, I have seen several examples of this part from TRW, and they were labeled 'Israel', so these should also be decent quality; if anything like their burglar alarm electronics, which are the best quality.

China!?!.... Thats both disturbing and funny at the same time. If I'm ever in a position where I have to use a new one I'll try to encase it with some JBweld just to make it stronger. As long as the cable is strong then np.
