Axle swap.... help!!!

It looks like my pinion bearings in the diff are shot, not only that but its a VERY rusty axle casing, and its a 100 yrs since i last rebuilt a diff. .
My cars an 83 trans Am with 3 spd Auto box with overdrive.
For not unreasonable money, ive been offered a Z28 Camaro rear axle. [both fitted with drums], and its complete, very low mileage.
My questions are, are they identical, ie a straight swap, and how far would the ratios be out, i dont care as long as its not horrendous, as i dont know yet if this Z28 is auto or manual.
As you can imagine, theres not much to chose from in the UK, and this is the only good one ive heard about.

Thanks for any advice\help.

any rear from a 3rd or 4th gen f body will be direct bolt in. only minor problems would be e brake cable and porpotioning valve if going from drum to disk brakes. the 4th gen rear is a few inches wider but will still bolt right up.

I thought about going disc, but there dont seem many over here, and even drums are not plentiful secondhand.
Thanks for the info, and i made a purchse.
