9 bolt gears and diff from AUS - questions
Has anybody here used one of the new style diff's that Dana is making nowdays for the 9 bolt rear? The price for a new, as they call it, hemisphere assembly(diff) and 3.45 gears isnt that terrible IMO shipped over from AUS.

(Let's see what everyone has to say before I throw out the $ number I was given)

I've never been inside of a rear other that to change fluids and snoop around. I do know that to go from my 2.77 gears to 3.45's I will need a new/other hemisphere assembly. I've been told:
"You will see the major difference between the two is that the early version has separate side
gears and LSD cones, where the current version has the side gear and cone a single part.
All have 28 spline side gears and the unit is rated for 560Nm (newton metres) which equates
to 413lbs/ft of torque. Other parts which would be required to rebuild the diff, would be carrier bearings, which support
the hemisphere, front & rear pinion bearings, collapsible spacer, rear cover gasket, 22mm pinion nut." Also, the pinion seal that is compatible with the recommended LSD additive.
Before I have something shipped I don't need/can't use I'd like to see what some of you have to say about it. Has anybody looked into this? Aside from whether you feel it is worth the $, does this info sound correct? What are some specifics I would need to be sure of to make certain this will work with no big-time problems.

I'm not really talking about the $$$. I want input on if anyone has used the newer style diff and if it all goes together in the old housing with no troubles or give me some advice as to what I need to be sure of before I order something I don't need or can't use. I was trying to avoid all of the "don't waste your money on this get a bolt-in 9 inch, it's better" or "you can do it cheaper than that by doing it this way" replies. I'll put up a $ figure later.

I didnt know Dana was making "new guts" for our 9 bolts.
Wouldnt suprise me if they were, "supposedly" our 9 bolts are a variation of a fairly common rear in Aussie-land.
I have not been able to establish any communication with someone willing to help me dig up the info over there.
Maybe an Aussi guy or two will read this and give us some type of info.
For pure bolt in and cost, u cant beat a 9 bolt for our cars.(provided parts are accessible lol no really, i mean it)
Bolt in axles and they hold together quite well until launches get on the brutal side..(seem to live quite well in high 1.6 low 1.7 60ft)

I was hoping that someone had some info on this. Either someone who had researched into it or someone with first-hand experience. I guess if I don't get any replies to that effect I'll find out for myself. My limited knowledge + the info I've received from DANA it seems as if it will work. Plus the $, other than shipping, are nearly the same as some prices I've seen for 10 bolt parts here.

Other than the prices I was quoted I shared what I know in my first post. That the new diff has the posi cones and side gears as one peice and the old style has them as seperate pieces. Also I was told by an AUS vendor that it will fit. Sometimes vendors "misunderstand" or "assume" and I was hoping for some constructive input to guide me in my purchase.

Motospecs is the vendor.
They are on the web @ http://www.motospecs.com.au/mspecs.html
If you can get these here without the shipping or at a reduced cost that would be grand. Report back on the outcome. Thanks

Just for fuel............... I came back from a "gov sponsored vacation" to Australia, a couple months back, and I have a vendor there that for about 450 would send me knew LSD. THE 9 bolt is in most everything down there. Old FALCONS, COMMODORES, HOLDENS, SKYLINES R-31'S......
I could see them all over the place.
The Hemi Version is not a viable swap, as told by my vendor. I almost picked a few to foward back to the states, but it looked like 9BOLTS.COM was the cheaper(all be it impossible to contact) route. i will dig up my info and share asap. I have to find it again.

Cool. Let us know what info you have.
Your 450, do you think that was delivered and is that 450 USD or AUD?

I HAVE ONE!!!
I haven't been on here for awhile, but I saw this post and thought I should reply.
I had to replace the posi carrier in my TTA because the cones were worn out beyond specification. I had a difficult time getting a new carrier here in the US, so in May of this year I purchased a replacement posi unit from Motospecs for around $570 USD shipped. It may seem a little pricey to some, but it arrived on a very timely basis (I think I had it in two weeks IIRC) and is a nice product. I installed it in my TTA without any problems, but only put about 50 miles on it before I had to put the car into storage (I moved across the U.S. and had to leave the car behind until my wife and I buy a house here). I had no issues with it in the short amount of time that I had to test it out. It was quiet, distributed an even amount of torque to both wheels and seemed to be just as strong as the stock unit.
Motospecs takes Mastercard, so you don't have to worry about the exchange rate...the credit card takes care of that for you. Don't be alarmed when they quote you a price, because it is in AUD, which is about 25% more than USD right now. If anyone has questions about my decision to purchase from Motospecs or if you have questions in general, feel free to e-mail me at:

What did they charge you for shipping? They quoted me 250 to ship LSD, gears, install kit. Did you reuse you installation parts or purchase new ones?
They charged me $150 AUD for shipping. I bought the carrier, a "special" additive and a compatible pinion seal from them. Supposedly, the one piece cones require a unique additive to prevent them from chattering and the special additive requires a new pinion seal to prevent leakage. They told me that the additive will break down seals that are made from Viton. I used an installation kit from Reider Racing.

I bought a master installation kit from West Coast Differentials in Rancho Cordova, CA. Comes with Pinion & Diff. Bearings/Spacers/Shims/Crush & some Ring Gear Bolts.
P/N IK GM7.75 $135 + Tax & Shipping
You'll also probably want to get Axle Bearings & Seals. I bought mine from GM, but you can also get them at GMPartsdirect.com or lots of other places I'm sure.
