third and fourth gear disapeared

I have recently just performed an automatic to standard tranny swap. I got it all back together started it on the stand and put it in reverse to make sure it worked and it did so i took it down, cleaned everything up and went for a test drive into town. Everything seem good all they way down my road and to the main road and i went through all the gears when turning onto the main road, i drove about 7 miles and when i got into town i attempted to downshift into 4th gear and there was nothing there, so i tried third, nothing there either..... the only gears i had were 1,2,5. So i drove over to a freinds house near by and checked the fluid and everything and it was full. I have no idea how the two gears could just stop working?????? ANY THOUGHTS OUR IDEAS would be greatly appreciated.. if it is something dumb i would like to fix it, if not i guess i will be buying a new tranny, suites me right for putting a used one in i guess

also any thoughts or comments on what tranny to put in? Built five speed or six speed swap possibly

the shift fork is either broken or bent, 1-2 has one 3-4 uses 1 and 5-r uses one

Im a little confused, what do you mean one and two has one and three and 4 have one and reverse and 5 have one. there is only one clutch fork. Also i dont know when it would have bent, it worked when i went through the gears to take off, and sometimes if you play with it a little it will go into gear, very very strange, no noise or anything, just cruising and when i went to down shift nothign was there. it feels like there is no synchro at all there what so ever

well theres a fork in the actual transmision, that the shifter slides into, they can break, and since there only 1 fork per 2 gears, its the logical thing at this point since 3-4 has its own fork

oh, guess that makes sense, i understand the basic concept of how the tranny works, but i didnt know that.... is that something that can be fixed relatively easy or cheaply or do i need a new tranny?

i think they are under 30 bucks for a new one, don't quote me though, and yes it can be done yourself no problem.

i'm not a tranny expert though

its possible that it just comes loose, i had a friend in a s-10 driving in 5th, went to downshift and there was nothing there, fork was all screwed up.

i'm not saying this is your problem forsure, but its a place to start looking

no problem, my advice is to get it taken in and checked out, transmissions are one place that doing a "good enough" job isn't usually gonna last.
