Broken speedo cable

......The speedometer cable broke at the transmission on my 85 z28. My question is can I just replace the adapter and the short cable after it, if so how does the adapter come off, or do I have to replace the whole cable? Canadian non cc car. Thanks.....Zapr.

Humm, I recently replaced the speedo cable in my 85 IROC, but the cable was one piece.

Cars with mechanical cruise control had a long cable from the transmission to the cruise control unit. and a short cable from there to the speedometer head.

......Mine has the opposite. It has a long cable from the speedo to an adapter located by the shift linkage on the transmission and then a short cable from the adapter to the transmission. My car has cruise control. There is also a wire connected to the adapter. The short cable is where the break is and I have not been able to get this cable or the adapter. Replacing the short cable would be so easy. Anyone? Thanks........Zapr.

Did anybody swap a different speedo into your car? Is the adapter offset? It sounds like your speedometer was swapped out and was reading the wrong MPH so they calibrated it with what you're calling an adapter. It's probably a speedometer calibration adapter.

Try a speedometer shop.

Where in Canada are you?

junkyard would have them i'd think.

I had CC, but my unit was seized, so I had to bypass it, and use a normal 1 piece speedo cable. I think I got it from a caprice or something.

It sounds like he's got an aftermarket ratio adapter though, not something stock.

Mr. Speedometer in Calgary could take care of you. I don't know of anyone in Ontario but I'm sure there's something.

ok, now I read this more carefully.

you say the speedo line goes from your cars speedometer, to this adapter, by the shift linkage, then to your tranny?

...but your car has cruise control. Doesn't the speedo cable have to go through the cruise control transducer? *is that the gizmo that you're talking about?* Or perhaps your years car uses a different type of cruise control, that doesn't require the speedo line to go into it...

Either way, I'd be wondering why the speedo cable broke in the first place, I would think it would need an excess force to cause it to snap. Perhaps years of no lube could do it, but in my case it was the CC transducer that was seized. Hence i'd be wondering if your adapter/transducer was seized.

If it was me, i'd bypass the unknown gizmo, using a normal 1 piece cable from the JY. If that makes the speedo work, then I'd pace a car, and find out if you speedo is off or not, then look into an adapter.

Just to throw in a monkey wrench, how short is the short cable that broke?> You might be able to find a car in the JY that has CC, or an adapter on it, and use it's short cable.... (assuming your short cable doesn't have a weirdo end on it or something.)

Good luck.

..........Your right. The cable goes to the transducer, then to the transmission. But, right at the shift linkage there is an adapter with a wire attached to it. (Not sure where the wire goes to). Then from the adapter there is a short cable about six inches long and connects to the trans. The fitting that threads the cable to the trans. housing was ripped out when a trans. mounting bolt broke. My mechanic fixed it but said the speedo cable would have to be replaced eventually. The speedo finally quit. The short six in. cable fraid but the rest of it is ok. If I could find this shorter cable that would be great. Thanks for all the feedback guys........Zapr.
