Axle swap question

I just bought a rear from (I think) an 87 Camaro. It was out of the car when I got it. It's a 4HJ code, 3.42 posi. I think it started life as a 3.23 and had a gear swap. Gears look good, but it has a bad axle, 26 spline. The bearing surface is galled, rough, and no longer smooth. I'll change the bearings.

Here's the question. Will an axle out of my 2.73 peg leg rear work in the posi? If not, I'll have to buy a new axle.

Thanks for the help.

All the third gen 26 spline, 10 bolt axles will interchange. They're even the same length on each side.

Rent a slide hammer with a wheel bearing puller. It will look similar to whats in this pic.

Another option, perhaps, is an off-set bearing, which allows the original axel to ride in another spot on the bearing.

you can get around the slide hammer issue if you make a special tool for the bearings. mostly a piece of pipe long enough to go from one side to the other and a BFH to hit the pipe with.

I once heard an old mechanic say that he simply used the tip of the axel to pry the bearing out. I'd prefer the slide hammer, I think.

I've got a long piece of pipe that will fit nicely into the rear end housing. I think I'll try that first.

Thanks for the tips, guys!!

The pipe worked. No problem.

Thanks again.
