According to GM, there are some pans you can use RTV with and some you shouldn't. The difference is in the ridges along the sealing surface. I don't rememberwhich is which.

I've always heard that you can't use it on any automatic. Somthing about the trans fluid dissolving it and running it through the system.

Thats the 2nd time Ive seen RTV in a service manual as a replacment for a gasket. Over at the Truck board some people were saying thier trucks came with RTV on the valve covers from the factory and showed a service manual scan to back it up.
Either way use a gasket. Tt's much safer then RTV, besides the mounting surface must be super clean and dry for RTV to cure properly.
