700R4 shift point
So I have a recently rebuilt 700R4 and stock 3.23s in the rear. Anyways when I stand on the gas it shifts at 5500. However since my top end is stock and power drops off long before 5500, I was curious if I could lower my ET by adjusting it to shift at more like 5000.

Yes, but you will fry your trans. Line pressure of the trans is controlled thru the tv. Governor controls shift points. Don't do it.

Hey thanks for the quick responses. I was just reading some threads on shift points, do you think my car, (stock top end) would benifit from slightly lower shift points?

Your car will probably like 4700 or so. This is assuming the car we are talking about is a the one in your profile. The l98 cars will not make power over 4400 rpm or so. If the long tube runner system is modded, 4800 or so seem to be the limit. The rules change on super ram, mini ram or holley stealth ram. I cannot speak for the mini or holley manifolds. I have no experience with these.

I am kinda discouraged to go in and change the weights, because I pulled the governor valve out to check it before my tranny rebuild and had a hell of a time trying to get to cover back in place. My next option would be manually shifting the trans, what is your opinion on this? I have heard it is not harmful, however I had a guy who builds trannys tell me that when you manually shift, the line preasure slightly drops between the gears, producing a less firm/effective shift as opposed to having left it in drive.

Manually selecting 1st actually increases the line pressure and adds more holding power. When you go to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th the line pressure will be the same as if the governor had shifted it. That being said, I typically setup my governor to shift about 500-1,000 RPM below my race shift points for normal everyday driving. If I go to the track, I just manually shift it, (have a shift light set 200 RPM below my desired shift point).
