trans only shifts when past 3000 rpm

i have a 700r4 trans. ive been rebuilding my car for about 5 months now and finally started the motor yesterday. when i took it for a drive the car only shifts when the rpms are above 3000rpm in all gears...i havent gone fast enough to check 4th. the tv cable is adjusted properly, even when i disconnect it at the throttle linkage and baby it it still requires me to 3000 rpm to get a shift into second. when it does shift, it shifts just fine. i read some posts and maybe its a stuck TV valve? the local trans shop wants to charge me like $300 to flush the system and replace the filter, but if the valve body is bad then i didnt fix anything right?

any suggestions?
it worked great 5 months ago but maybe with the trans sitting for 5 months w/o fluid in it, it got gummed up?
thnx

had the same problem, it was a vacuum hose that connects between the manifold and trans.

check that hose for leaks or simply replace it and im 99% sure your problem is fixed.

theres no vacuum lines in a 700r4. its all based on vehical speed and line pressure (governor+TV cable). i had this exact same problem. shifting at about 3500 rpm in all gears, and no od. do you have any kickdown? you also need to verify od. if not, the valve is stuck causing the trans to think that its at full throttle all the time, which will give you the no od you have. im no trans expert, but in mine it was the stuck tv valve that caused all these problems.

well, at first I started with my Tv cable, it was no good so i replaced it. when this didnt fix the problem, i figured it was the valve. Some say that if you give the Tv cable a good half dozen hard pulls when the car is idling, the valve will be pulled free. Try it, but if it does fix it, its only temporary. This didnt work for me. I ended up buying a TransGo Jr. shift kit which is made to fix the Tv valve sticking and other problems, but instead i just had my friends trans shop do all the work. They verified the sticking valve, and put in the jr shift kit, which solved the problem. If you think its the valve, and you think you can fix it yourself, i still have the transgo kit pm me if you want it. But make sure you are 110%positive the TV cable is adjusted right!!!!

im sure that its not the tv cable its self. i talked with the a trans shop and they told me to do a few tests with the tv cable, including what you said and it still does the same thing. when i pull the cable though, it feels kinda easy to pull till about half way, then it feels like its moving the valve. i already ordered all the stuff i need to pull the valve body out this weekend, even a transgo shift kit. i wish i would have waited
thanks for the reply, any tips for pulling the valve body out? any horror stories?

Nah, it shouldnt be too hard to do what youre doing. Just take your timeand dont get ahead of yourself. there are a lot of springs and check ***** that can be lost or misplaced very easily. Just follow the directions and be patient! Good luck hope this fixes it

im having the same problem with mine but it also does not engage the coast clutches, and it wont shift till red line. but i was just wondering if you had the same problem with the coast clutches (when you let off the gas, the engine goes to idle and doesnt slow the car down) or if i have and internal issue

thanks
chris

the problem that you are having is either the overrun clutches are toast or the overrun piston seal has failed. either way you need to open up the trans to get to them.

thanks for the info, is the piston in the valve body or the case? and since the trans worked fine befor i changed engines, could it just be stuck? they will engage in 1st gear but no other gears.

another thing the tv cable is set right so i dont know what to do now, it also starts out in 2nd if you put it in drive. it will start in 1st but you have to manually pull it back to first. maybe the t.v. is stuck?? the car sat for like 3 months could all this stuff have just gummed up, it seemed to do fine before.

my trans just started working today, works just like it did before i rebuilt the engine. all i did was what 700r4.com told me, but i did it everyday before i went to work. i went out and started the car, let it warm up, put it in reverse and manually pulled the TV cable in and out with the P brake engaged. might want to try that cuz i went though the same thing as you but i still ordered the parts to rebuild the valve just incase it happens again
take care
