700R4 to turbo 350

Hey guys,
I wrecked my '82 T/A (got it back from insurace so I can strip it) and I found an '87. I had a built TH350 in my '82 and I was thinking about putting it in the '87, if I get it, along with my motor. My question is what should I take out of my '82? I know the tranny and the adapter, but what about the shifter (the 350 only has 7 positons and the 700 has 8 right?), linkages, driveshaft and the piece that shows what gear you are in (other wise I technically can't go into 1st right?)?

Ok I have done some searching and found out that I have to keep my driveshaft, seeing as how the 700R4s is shorter than the 6" tailshaft 350, and I already have this system working in my '82, but I still can't find anything about whether or not I have to take my linkages, shifter, and gear indicator piece (the thing that goes on the counsel to let you know what gear you are in). Any help would be much appreciated because I would hate to leave something on the car, send it to scrap and then find out I needed it.

take the drive shaft and the cable.....take the indictator as well but it does not matter only for reference...the car will go into 1st but the indicator will read 2nd if you use the 87s since it is set up for an over drive transmission

If the new car is running a different style intake then there is a chance the cables (kickdown, etc) might not fit the new intake. I would take all the cables and see if they work or not. If not you'll have to buy different ones, this is what I had to do for my TPI. Definately re-use the crossmember and driveshaft. The 700R4 crossmember will not work without modification. I'm guessing you are running the original 200R4 crossmember? That ones is supposed to work. There are 2 versions of TH350 tailshaft, the 6" and the 9" versions, commonly refered to as short tail and long tail. The 700R4 driveshaft will only work with the long tail TH350 (or a TH350 with the 700R4 tailshaft conversion). If you have the 6" tailshaft which is the short tail then you need a longer driveshaft than the one that comes with a 700R4. But its not a problem because you already have the longer driveshaft from a 200R4 I'm assuming. As far as the shifter indicators, I believe it will read off. When I did my swap I already had a B&M Shifter and my indicators are not even hooked up so I didnt get to verify. But I do know from the way it shifted, what would have been OD (4th) was D (3rd) and down the line. So I imagine it would read 2nd when in 1st. So if you already have the shifter indicators and everything setup then take that too. Hopefully it'll fit in the console in the 87 (not sure on that one but go for it).

Take the trans, crossmember and driveshaft from your car. You may need an aftermarket adjustable kickdown cable, depending on your setup. You can use the overdrive shifter cable and shifter.

i am doing the same swap how do you hook up the arm from the rearend to the tranny but i am going to run lakewood lift bars and lakewood says you dont have to run this bar to tranny you can get rid of it but i would rather keep it after reading some posts on here that says you need to keep them

That bar is called a torque arm. You can use a conversion kit or adapter which will basically consist of an overpriced bracket (Hurst or B&M) or you can swap on the 700R4 tailshaft which will have the torque arm mount and allow you to use the stock 700R4 driveshaft. I think this is the best way to go for most 700R4 to TH350 swaps with the short tail. But for the original poster here, he already has all the parts he needs to make it work with the short tail so hes on the right track. WHen I did my swap I happened to have a longtail TH350 so it was bolt in as far as re-using the 700R4 driveshaft.

Im going to bring this back from the dead. Im hopefully going to do this swap and i have a few questions.
1. Will the 700r4 tailshaft work on a TH350?
2. I plan on using a Hurst quarter shifter, i have seen them just put through the stock shifter plate, but how do you get to the neutral saftey switch, and does anyone have any pics of this?
3. Will my 164-T flexplate work?
