700R4 shift points

I rebuilt my dad's 86 700 several months ago and everything turned out great except for the tv cable adjustment. I know you are not supposed to adjust the shift points with the tv cable but if i adjust the cable correctly, the trans shifts to soon, it's sloppy and it won't kickdown when i am trying to pass somebody. But, when I push the cable in (towards the firewall), the trans shifts great, I have a passing gear and all is well. Of course, if I go to full throttle, it pulls the cable out and I have to start over. What could be the problem.

by the way, the trans has a 10 vane pump, alto clutches, hardened sun shell, and a transgo shift kit, with the stock converter.

I sort of have a similar problem. When I have the adjuster pulled out (away from the firewall) it wants to shift late. But when the adjuster is pushed in (towards the firewall) it shifts great, but the transmission wont kick down when I step on the gas. I was thinking maybe it had something to do with my shift kit? Let us know.

The governor controls the shift points, you are just going to have to by the Corvette 5200rpm governor or buy the B&M governor adjuster kit. You can set part throttle shift points and WOT shift points with the B&M kit.

How's that B&M part adjusted? How do you set the shift points with it?

the B&M is trial and error to an extent. You change the weights and springs on the governor with the supplied ones until you get the combination you like. The vette governor is factory set to around 5200.

I really don't want to change the shift points. I am looking to find out if there is some alignment issue to explain why the correct way of adjusting the tv cable is not working.

The TV cable can't over-ride the governor. If the governor isn't calibrated properly then even if the Tv is pulled, it won't down shift.
- also, the throttle valve(in valve body) could be worn or it could be one of the "non-downshift" units. - if too much fluid is bypassing the plunger(worn out) it won't down shift.

First it is critical that you have the TV cable adjusted so that at WOT the cable is tight (you cannot pull it out any further). Now if the shifts are late at light throttle openings, you can back off a "click or two" NO MORE than this, to bring down the shifts slighty. If you do this and "lose" the downshift, put the TV setting back. If you have to over correct the TV cable to get the downshifts, and then you lose the setup (because of the TV cable moving out of adjustment) then you will need the Sonnax over the center TV cable corrector. This will prevent the TV cable from pulling itself out of adjustment. I carry these, and they install easily. If the the TV cable does not hold the setup when it is adjusted correctly, then replace the TV cable.

I am a bit confused. Since my tv cable gets pulled out too far at WOT, should I think about using a universal tv cable?
