Replace this seal?

This is leaking at the shifter shaft. How do you replace the seal?

If im reading you correctly you mean the selector shaft at the side of the trans ? if so it usually requires droping the pan and pulling the selector shaft out to replace the "O" ring on the shaft , not a really big job but you have to watch the parts inside the trans to make sure nothing falls out . and it's kinda messy if you don't have access to a hoist and drain pan . actually after looking at a manual I have here you may just be able to pry it out with a small screwdriver if you have a 700r4 trans and it says you can tap a new one in with a 14mm socket ...sounds easy enough ...

That's correct. My picture seems to be too big for the 1 meg limit. I will try this again.

One more try. What do I have to do to post a picture on this new fangled website?

It responds that I have already posted a picture. Where is it?

that seal is easy to replace. You can get it out with a small screwdriver but be careful not to scratch to shaft to bad. you do not have to remove the pan to do this. just remove the select lever and cable, then get the seal out. there is a special tool that makes getting the seal out a lot easier. any parts store like car quest or oreilys usually has it. ask for the selector shaft seal removal tool for the 700 r4. I think it costs like $20. then tap in the new seal with a socket.

I do not think you can buy the seal separately; all the seals come in one seal kit for under $20

Just finished the install of the seal. I was able to buy it individually and not in a kit. The seal is made by Federal Mogul and cost me $4.86 at O'Reily Auto Parts. Advanced Auto and Auto Shack did not stock it. The Federal Mogul stock number is #8792S.

The reference for the shaft is a "selector shaft seal". You will also need a removal and installer tool from K-D tools. An easy find on their website. It costs $16.95. I took pictures of the removal and install but I have yet to successfully post a picture on here. Luckily, a friend of mine had the referenced tools.

Anyhoo, I put my T/A on jackstands, removed the distributor so that I could get enough "tilt" on the tranny. I lifted up the rear of the tranny with a floor jack and removed the tranny cross-member. The I lowered the rear of tranny so that I had enough room from the floor "hump" to reach the selector and slide the removal tool over the shaft. Tapped it on with a hammer and screwed it into the seal. Turning the screw on the end of the removal tool extracts the seal. Placed the new seal on the shaft and tapped it into place.

Put everything back together and fired up the T/A. Ran it on the highway for a few minutes and it shifted okay. I cleaned up the garage floor and I will see how much of a "puddle" that appears tomorrow morning.

That's great, I hope you won't find a puddle under your car.

Praise the automotive gods that be.

No tranny puddles. Replaced the 60psi oil sender while I was in that part of the engine. Had a leak at the top of the sending unit.

I don't know about most people, but I do not like any sort of leak or spill over from my automobiles.

I hear ya on the leaks, but one of my rides has 216,000 on it now and there isn't much that doesn't leak. I don't know where to start. Any of my lower mileage vehicles
are not ALLOWED to leak. HA

Re: Replace Shift Selector shaft seal?

Thanks Berry for that part Number, it was right on. The parts monkey behind the counter was lost till I gave him the number.
The Seal is like a miniture front pump seal on the trans. I dropped the pan and removed the flat spring that puts pressure on the shift selecter. then took off the nut on the inside end of the selector shaft, There's a spring clip on the shaft itself that you need to pull off. Then push the shaft from the inside out. I used a small pick with a hook to remove the seal. Then used a small C-clamp to install the new seal. I put the shaft on the end off my cordless drill and polished the surface with some fine sandpaper. reinstalled everything and works great...no drip
Hope this helps someone

Re: Replace this seal?

I purchased two extra, just in case.

As I write, I just finished a tranny removal and install in just under 4
hours yesterday. Bad tranny came out without a fight and the new
rebuilt went in without any glitches or broken parts.

Now to get the state safety inspection this thursday when I'm off.

JB.
