T-5 keeps leaking at speedo - fix?

I've always had problems with my speedo leaking where it goes into the transmission. It's the old style straight mechanical speedo.

As I recall, there's a aluminum piece that holds the plastic speedo gear. That metal piece has an O-ring along with a small O-ring that goes on the plastic gear (which spins inside the metal piece and driven by the cable).

The one that always seems to leak is the one that's on the plastic gear, so there's always a drop of oil hanging from the nut that holds the cable in the assembly. I've tried new O-rings to no avail....

What's the best way to get this to seal up? Do I need to replace just the plastic gear, or the gear AND the metal piece too?

I've tried searching but come up with garbage. Any assist apreciated.

Replace the metal piece.

Its official name is "sleeve".

The OE one is chinesium; replacement ones are steel. The difference is amazing.

The gear is probably fine.

Thx! So it's called a sleeve huh? Just to clarify, the "sleeve" is the metal piece I mentioned above...it is held into the trans with - what I'll call - a "U-clamp with a bolt right? I'll see if it's still available from the dealer then! I could go to the JY, but I gotta get this to stop leaking since I'll have the tranny out of the car soon. My goal is no leaks when I reinstall it!!

Here's what the OE one looks like, compared to the replacement.... see if you can figure out which one is which....

Ahhh...I'll assume the one on the left is the replacement. Mine looks just like the aluminum (or pot metal) piece in the right hand pic with the o-rings. I'll guess that the black part with the electrical connector in the same pic is for an electric speedo? I don't have that part.

Thanks for the pic! It's really worth a thousand words!

Right, the electrical thing is a VSS, which goes in the same hole in cars that use that system.

You guessed rigth as to which "sleeve" is which. It's not hard to see how weenie the chinesum piece is, compared to the replacement.

There are 2 different length speedo gears, and GM used 2 different sleeves to accomodate this. If your parts are not worn, you may have a mis-match. Let me know if you need new ones.

Ummm..... the factory?

Or maybe their authorized representative: your local dealer, or GMPartsDirect?

Just a thought; don't pay too much attention to me though.
