I just took my track bar off; there are no threads inside of the "collar". If the bolt broke off, then take a small screw driver/punch & hammer and tap it through till you can get your hands on it or it falls out.

If it's rusty you can hit it w/ some WD or PB, that may help. Mine was rusty, but my wrench and 5lb hammer won that fight.

dude that sucks. if you can get the bar out of the bracket,i'd use a torch to roast the bushing out so you can get the piece of bolt out of it then just replace the bolt and bushing. be sure to use a good quality bolt like a grade 5 or 8 as a replacement. not some chinese junk bolt,or you will be doing this again soon.

It's been 4 months since this happened and still...?

What broke off... the head? The bolts are 'stepped.' They're 'one way' bolts, which means they can only go in or come out from one side--the head side. It won't punch through the other side. So if the head broke off, and you're trying to pound it through from that side, it's NOT gonna come out, period--no matter how hard you pound it.

And with the nut holding it in tight from the other side, you won't get it out the head side either. So get the nut off by whatever means you have(torching, cutting, drilling, nut-splitter, etc.), and what's left of the bolt will prolly slide right out.

Then go to a junkyard to get a replacement bolt. Actually, go to the yard first so you'll have a new bolt ready to install when you get the old one out.

some other guy posted about this a while ago too...
Usually the bolt seizes in the steel collar in the rubber bushing. So when you hammer it, the rubber bushing absorbs the "whack", like hitting a stuck bolt with a rubber hammer... Doesn't do much.
Heat will just burn your bushing, probably won't help. Maybe though.

The bolt you get from GM, I don't know the P/n offhand, but they can look it up. It's a stepped M14-12 I think. It's grade 12.9 and it's galvanized. When you put the new one in, GOOP it in antiseize. Use a washer on both sides, and the M12 (I think) stover nut. GM has the bolt for ~$7 each, and the nuts are $12 each. The nut you can get anywhere though, so i'd get it elsewhere for the $1 it's worth, but the bolt you should get from GM.

As for the problem at hand, you'll probably never get that bolt out of the bushing. You just need to remove the head of the bolt, and the nut, and remove enough material so that the bolt or nut side isn't hanging out in the bracket. Use a dremel or die grinder or.... And remove enough material that you can drop the panhard down. Then use a drill and remove the rubber bushing. Ie, drill the bushing until it looks like swiss cheese, then just slide the remains out. Get a poly replacement from energy suspension, $20, and you don't need a 20 ton press, just push it in. Done and done.

FWIW, I think I used my angle grinder and a zip disk. I removed the nut and bolt head, then tried to remove a bit of material. Then I pried the bracket outwards a bit until I could get the bar out, then bent the bracket back.
Good luck, don't get too frusterated with it!

Hell, if it was mine and was that stubborn, after a week of trying I'd have given up and used it as an excuse to get an Edlebrock adjustable for $109!

Hats off to your patience! My wallet is thin, but not THAT thin!

That's great you found a bolt, but you realize this thread is 10 years old. Last response was 8/30/2006

I posted it because when I searched it in Google, this thread came up (along with a couple others).

I found the information helpful. It was a current problem for me. I lost my bolts. I didn't fully understand what the stepped bolt looked like. This was one of the three threads I found so I thought I'd contribute for next guy, who might search for it the same way I did. Google.

Re: panhard bar bolt broke Help

BTW guys.. I part out third gens and if any of y'all need any odd factory used bolts I sell them for 50 cents to $2.50 each depending on what they are, plus USPS flat rate $6.75 shipping... Will also make package deals if you need say all of the rear suspension bolts, or all of the front clip bolts, etc.

Re: panhard bar bolt broke Help

from what i've seen, the bolts in a 4th gen are the same and they coated them better so they don't rust up as much... probably easier to grab them from a yard for a buck or two than order online..
