quick speedo gear question

ok, im swapping a T-5 to a 700r4, yea i know theres not many people that do that, but i dont have the money to rebuild my bro's and my 700r4 is fine. so its bassically i rebuild the T-5 with the $$ i dont have or not have a tranny. so.. will a speedo gear from a T-5 fit into a 700r4?? i've searched and cant find anyone who has swapped a T-5 to a 700r4. also if there is anybody that has done this swap, is there any problems you ran into.

No it's different. The cable will still attach though, they are the same. Does the 700 have a speedo drive already installed?

I helped a friend do this. It's not overlly difficult. You need to cover the hole for the shifter, we welded in a patch panel. You need brackets for the shifter, and you need to drill a new hole for the shifter cable. You'll also have to adress the clutch safety switch, and I would suggest installing a park/neutral safety switch as well. You'll also need to hook up a reverse lights switch.
And you need a radiator with a cooler built in or an aftermarket trans cooler, plus the lines.

thanks jay,
yes the 700r4 does have a speedo gear installed, but the only problem is that the car im pulling it from (my 84 camaro) has a 3.08 rear and the car its going in (the TA) is a 3.73 so... speedo gonna be really off im guessing.

the trans am radiator has holes for tranny lines so im guessing it has a cooler??

and i took the part of the floorpan that the shifter bolts to out of the camaro.
so thanks,
Joe

Yes if it's got the holes in the radiator then you should be all set, just connect the lines up.

As for the speedo gears you'll need to change them out if you want it to read right.

If it's been sitting open for any length of time, you might want to flush the cooler first.

Speaking of speedo gears......where can I get the gear to go in the tranny to make it right for 3.73's as well as the gear that is on the back of the instrument cluster? Or would I have to get a whole new speedo cable?

A GM dealer will have them, or transmission shops usually have several laying around.

There are no gears on the back of the cluster.

electric speedo??!!

i pulled my engine and tranny now (from the 84 camaro) and i found that the tranny is out of an 87 trans am.(it was swapped by the previous owner) the speedo on my 84 trans am is not electric. so do i need a new speedometer completly or can i hook up the cable from the trans am to the tranny. i know alot of people ask this but i figured while i was typing id ask... what tooth speedo gears should i get for a 700r4-3.73 rear.

Take out the VSS in the tail of the transmission and put in a cable driven housing with a new driven gear.

The drive gear will be fine. It's 17 tooth. Go to this site and complete the known info and it will tell you what driven gear you need. I agree on the transmission shop for the gear. I stopped at one yesterday and they had a box 18 inches square full of gears.

speedo swap

ok i have an idea but i wanna run it past you guys first before i go spend money on something im not sure of. if i pull a guage cluster out of a 87-92 trans am/firebird and the harness w/ it, and put it in my trans am, should this solve my problems. also the whole speedometer system seems to be diffrent from T-5's to 700R4s are there any problems you guys have faced with this.
thanks for all the feedback
Joe

The whole speedometer system is the same whether you have a T5 or a 700R4. Only the gears in the transmissions themselves are different.

i was looking at the T-5 in my garage and it looks completly diffrent. mabe i am seeing the difference in the housings from electric speedo to not electric??
and the speedometer gear itself (the one on the cable, not in the tranny) mounts diffrent. the one on the 700R4 is bigger and mounts on a little metal stud type thing attached to the VSS im assuming. and the one out of the T-5 has a plastic shaft attached to the gear. are these diffrences between the manual and electrical speedometers??

thank you
so do you think i would be better off geting a new cluster going to electric or converting the electric to the tranny to manual. and if i would go manual, the housing hole for the electric is much bigger than the manual, ive been trying to figure out how i could make this work all day and have gotten nowhare, any
sorry for all the questions im just so confused about this whole swap

Convert the transmission. It doesn't take more than 30 seconds to do it.

ok, thanks,
should the whole housing come out, the metal part and all, because all i got out was the plastic (yellow) part that the VSS plugs into and the VSS itself?
are there any special tools to do this (on the manual or electric housings)
thanks again
Joe

All you need is a 10mm wrench.
