need help with choosing complete rear end

i found out today that theres a problem with the posi unit in my 10 bolt. about 4 months ago i paid a shop to swap in some precision 3.73's after i fragged my richmond 4.10's. instead of continually dropping money into the rear, im just going to buy a complete rear and install it myself.

from what i've been reading, it seems like strange 12 bolts are the way to go. i'm not dead set on any company, or a certain axle, but i've read enough bad things about moser i want to avoid them. my engine doesnt make huge power, i'd estimate 340 hp to the wheels, i would like the rear to be able to hold up to possible 11 second normally aspirated runs. right now it does high 12's and 11s on nitrous, but its also my daily driver, so reliability is a must.

how difficult of an undertaking is there? i'm mechanically experienced, and i have a gm service manual but ive never done this, and done really know any experience mechanics that could help me.

is there no possible way to use my 10 bolt brakes with a 9 inch or 12 bolt? anything else i ought to know before i dive headfirst into this with my daily driver?

If you get a rear with the bracketry to fit a thirdgen, it's a direct swap, just like putting in a factory rear. You should be able to order it with axle flanges to mount your factory brakes, too.

You could do it in your garage, yes. Lots of people here have swapped rear ends in their garage/driveway/whatever.

i know it can be done is a garage, i guess my question should have been, is this something only a trained professional should do, or can i do it myself without professional assistance other than a gm service manual.

It's not that difficult really. Disconnect the brake lines, disconnect the suspension components, and the rear falls out of the car.

Not hard at all. It's been a pain in the *** for me to get to my e-brake lines because of the tunnel brace I'm running, but if your not running one then swapping the rear should be easy as pie. I'm in the middle of doing mine right now and I've had no problems. I've just been using basic hand tools, a creeper and a nice big can of PB Blaster.

i've found aerokroil to work much better than pb blaster.

are you using a jack adaptor for the rear, or just benchpressing it, or what?

should i be looking at 31 or 35 spline axles, or is there much of a difference? i dont mind spending an extra hundred bucks or two for a sturdier rear, but i dont want to have to worry about it.

Huh, I'll have to try that stuff. I have the jack under the pumpkin of the differential and then I usually get a friend and myself to pull it out from under the car and hold it steady.
