big time NOOB question..dont laugh plz
Okay, Im very very new to this whole car thing,
I bought my camaro like 10month ago
and I barely got into cars.
just been reading lots of car stuff
and manual to repair minor stuff myself
and now I have decent knowledge in engines.
but as for transmission, axles blah blah
until I take a class about this topic in 2month,
I'm clueless to what all the words I read in here means..
is POSI like an abbreviation?
if so, what is it?
sounds like its the upper level unit of rearend?
and I figured(hopefully) that 3.04 and all that number
shows gear ratio of the differential and the higher the number gives out more torque to the tires?
does swapping rearend of my 91Rs camaro's stock to a whats so called POSI rearend help out in performance alot?
I think these are so noobish to ask that Im sure it hasnt been mentioned..
I'm reading about transmission in howstuffworks.com
now but if someone nice with knowledge can answer my above question Im really greatful.. thanks.

Posi is short for positraction aka Safe-T-Track aka LSD (limited slip differential) in other words both wheels will put power to the ground vs one. The higher the gear ration the better the accelration will be (typically) there is no super gear. A 4.56 rear end in your car most likely wont help if street driven unless you like drving around town at 3500 rpms all day. try something more in the 3.23-3.73 range. Will help performance if you have traction issues. Remeber, the higher the gear, the quicker the engine will be in the power band, but the gas milage, the engine life, and top speed (on High output cars) will suffer.
We were all new at one point.
Google is also an awesome tool.

cool, thanks.
I just read about differentials, gears,
transmission in howstuffworks.com
now I know what 3:1 ratio and all that means..
I got a v6 and I dont care much for topspeed
as I am only looking to mildly compete in town street
or freeways.
lets say, Ill never want to go over 95mph anyways,
but I want a better acceleration,
will 3.23 or higher but not too high help?
another question is..
basically if i want to upgrade to a lets say, 3.23
is buying differential(of 3.23?) all I need?
will it be like I just take the rearend cover off,
take the old differential off and snap the new one in
and woohoo Im upgraded, like that?
or is it more like if I want a higher ratio,
I need the whole rearend swapped
including all the axle shafts?
thanks for the help man.. I like google too
but howstuffworks gives detailed animation
and its really helpful too

swapping new gears in it, just requires a new pinion anda new ring and shims, and a crush sleeve.
can buy that as a set, but the tricky part is alignment, if it isnt done right the gears will make a very irritating whine and it will wear out as fast as hell!
i wouldnbt bother going from 3.00 to 3.23 or whatever, i went from 2.93 to 4.10 that you can feel. but with a th350 it isnt pleasant at the highway.
might ask a shop to replace the gears

cool.
so.. just curious.
why would ppl buy the whole rearend assembly for like
2000$ when you can buy a good set of gear for like,
300bux?
if I buy the drive axle(2 of them),
and new gear, isnt that same thing as pretty much replacing
the whole thing but saves lot more money?
thanks

When people buy a 2000 dollar axle it is most likely a 12 bolt, or 9" ford rear end. Normally you can get the whole axle from an f-body for around 100-300 dollars. 12 bolts and 9" rears are a lot heavier duty, and can take a ton of power. They won't break as easily like the 10 bolts have, and do.

have a transmission or other garage do your gear change. The 10 bolt rears have issues holding high hp. I say high HP because some people have had them hold together with 375+HP while others kick the can with a stock 5.0L. You wont be able to do the gear change your self without sufficient knowledge. Go with a 3.73 if you want a noticeable change without a complete loss of streetability. Seems to be a good allaround number. If you must, go with a 4.11 but go no higher. Also prepare for your speedo to be off. You will want to do some research on recalibrating the speedo. I know I will probably catch some heat for this but dont expect to run with alot of things with a v6, yes you will walk on some of the foriegn crowd, and some will walk on you, but a new v6 camaro (i.e. the 3800 series II) new stangs (black evil I know), etc. will probably take you failry easily. Do some exhaust mods, K&N filter etc. to help you out a bit too.

thanks tad.
although Im totally new to transmission fieild,
I am familiar with motor etc and I do have
open air filter mod, along with some other mod
like underd pulley and stuff.
I don wanna be the fastest in the street or anything,
but I just cant stand like geo metro passing me,
so yeah I might try the 3.73 then, thanks!
