Eaton Posi Unit

Was wondering if buying a Eaton posi unit was worth it money and power wise? I don't have money for a 9inch or 12 bolt and could get the Eaton posi for around $120. What else would I have to do to make it work?

Eaton "posi" for around $120? I'm guessing used..... You sure you're not looking at a powertrack type unit? - Either way, you're still talking stock, easily breakable axles and other rear diff components.....

for $120 it's a steal. i bought mine for $250 used.

and the powertrax units are $399 new...and aren't worth a dang.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
As long as it's not a "Gov-Lock"....

I'd pay $120 to get one of those out of my rear end (let alone my car's) if I had one.

That particular unit is stock in S trucks, especially 4WD ones. It acts like an open, until the difference in RPM between the 2 axles exceeds some value like 100 RPM; at which point it tries to lock up. In other words, you get no posi action whatsoever until tire spin has already occurred. Then it tries to lock up with a bang, and that makes the vehicle unstable; and tends to make parts fly out through the cover. One guy on here found pieces of his in his gas tank... after all the fuel drained out the holes the shrapnel made on its way out of the rear and into the tank.

Look in the little "window" in the carrier. If you see 2 little weights on little bitty shafts, RUN AWAY!!! It's a Grenade-Lock. They tend to live up to that affectionate nickname.

Well the auction is now going up to $200 or more so I may just rebearing and seal my rear and put a new gear ratio in it for now.

I've got one of those in a 2-series carrier(laying on garage floor = heavy soccer ball)....been threating for a while to tow it around on a cord behind my suburban.....as craptatstic as those things are it'd probably screw something up on my burban just doing that....

I loved my Eaton till it broke last week. you can get them for $399 new from Ring and pinions, posi units for Chevrolet, Camaro and Ford or up to $500 from other vendors.
just be aware that they are a wearable item and possibly factor in the rebuild cost while buying a used one.

After review what you guys said that the auction went up and i missed it. I think im just going to rebuild my rear and put a high ratio ring and pinion and see how long it last. I'll save for a 9inch later.
