Had a mechanic adjust my kickdown cable... Did he set it right?
Hello,
I have a 1989 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z, 350 TPI, automatic 4 speeds, 2.77 9-bolts...
Just had a GM mechanic adjust the kickdown cable/TV cable or whatever it's called, don't know anything about these things... It go to the throttle if it can help...
He did not set it like said here by opening the throttle by hand and bla bla until it ratchet...
He only used a screw driver and adjusted the cable with that. We wen't on a test drive first so he could see what it did, didn't shift from 2 to 3 in Wide Open Throttle. He adjusted it 3-4 times like this and we tried it everytime. Now it shift from 2 to 3 in WOT, but it shift between 4400RPM and near 5000RPM. Sometimes when I try it, it shift at 4400, sometimes 4600, 4800... Is it normal that it never shift at the same place? Is it the right RPM range for a 89 350 TPI?
If something is wrong, he will get it back in the face.
Thanks guys!

if its done right, the tv cable should be at its max when the throttle is at the max, if you know what i mean.
take that tv-cable off and let someone give full throttle , (with the engine off, please)
while your buddy holds the pedal, pull at the tv-cable and check if its flush with the point where it connects to the throttle bracket.
if not, adjust.
its just not right to adjust it the way he did.

It's sooooo easy to do it right yourself, and it takes only 1 minute to adjust.
I just dont see any reason why you shouldnt do it yourself...
Wish i was a mechanic near you, i would make easy money that way....

cable should be out max when the throttle is WOT ?
for real ?
then why do we set it by pulling the sheathing back all the way and letting the WOT pull as much cable out as it wants to, and dont just pull it all out instead?
im confused?

When he adjusted it, it was a little farther from the jacket than initially, not too much, just a little, so maybe he set it right this way too then?
Because when the cable was a little closer to the jacket, it wasn't shifting in 3rd at WOT. Now it shift in 3rd at WOT, but between 4400 and 5000RPM, is it a normal place to shift for a stock 350 TPI?
Do I have to worry I may "burn" my trans with what he did or I should be ok?

the cable is not meant to control shift points but to control line pressure in the tranny. wide open throttle= full line pressure. the cable needs to be as far out as it can be when wide open. cable alingment is also critical when using carbs...

Can anyone take some pics? Not to rob the thread, but I think mine is messed up. It's kinda hard to explain. The is the D button. Right where the d button is, there is a plastic tube that slide in it. YOu press the button, it slides back and forth making tension on the cable. the problem is, the cable that connects to the trans, should the cable be permanently attactched to this tube where it slides behind the d button? If I pull the cable between the trans and the d button, I can see a single wire that is attached to the TB, but the black hose that is around it moves all around.
