My 91 RS needs a new transmission. It currently has a 4 speed auto that is original. I would like to know which Transmission I have (400)? Or how do I go about finding this information out.

I would also like to get suggestions on the next step.
-Do I try to get it rebuilt
-Should I go for a reman or new
-What kind of performance upgrades should I look into

I don't know much, but I was told something about going under the car and counting the bolts on the tranny will tell you. Mine was either 11 or 16 so I counted...16...and I found out what it was.

Maybe it wasn't 16? Does that tranny have 16? I forget...now I'm curious, do you know if a 700r4 is 16?

fire fighter, you have a 700R4

What motor is in the car? Planning big HP upgrades?
if not, just get a decent condition junkyard trans. Rebuilding will be expensive, roughly the same cost as new.

Thanks everyone
Thanks everyone for all the info!

I plan on rebuilding my 1991 RS from the ground up. So definate HP modifications are in the future. This car won't be used for racing, but I want to build a high quality, powerful, and most important-a car that will last to pass onto the next family generation.

Presently I have an unmodified 305 TBI. This won't last long!
Any suggestions on Transmission setups and aftermarket add-ons that will improve performance and be reliable as well?

There are many mods that you can do. Most install a heavy duty reaction shell. Some also beef up the 3-4 clutch pack.Do not be afraid to search. Lots of info in the archives.
