Yes, install a posi unit in the differential. However, your best bet would to go to a junkyard and find a complete posi rear axle setup off another 3rd gen.

instalation of a posi carrier isn't possible with out special gear set-up tools and knowledge of how to properly set-up a ring and pinion.
- By the same token you could have it set-up, making this a perfect time to change gears(2.73 stockers?)

don't pay any attention to shagwell. there are no special tools required to swap carriers. change out the ring gear, set or check back lash, and if it makes you feel better you can check the contact pattern. it's that easy. then again if you can a socket set and a couple of wrenchesspecial tools then i guess it does take special tools. you will need a torque wrench, which you should have and a mag base and indicator.

Or, swap the rear from an LS1 car - easy swap, and you get gears, posi, and LS1 rear disc brakes - all for about $300. The rear wheels just poke out a tad farther (about 1 3/8 inches each side) as the 4th gens had longer axles and different wheel backspacing. Some like the look, some don't - search on 4th gen rear for pics.

...most people seem to consider a dial-bore gauge to be a specialty tool. That's all I was refering to was the back-lash and proper shimming of the carrier for contact pattern.

you don't need a dial bore gage, how many ring and pinions you even set up? less than one i bet. and indicator and mag base is a pretty basic tool for anyone fooling with an engine, or rear end.

I was talking a height indicator(dial bore gauge) and a magnetic base for back-lash, maybe I was using the wrong terms. I too consider them simple, but most general type mechanics I've helped seemed to look at it like it's a machinists' lathe.

dan it just seems a bit strange that someone with that vast amount of experience doesn't have a clue as to what tools are required to do the job, or the names of the tools.

maybe my tool naming is off, but when I bought my "height gauge" the box said dial bore gauge. 2-1/2" round gauge that measures the movement of the small pin protruding from the side. (+ the magnetic base to hold it steady)
instalation of a posi carrier isn't possible with out special gear set-up tools and knowledge of how to properly set-up a ring and pinion.
let me re-word;
proper installation of a posi carrier isn't possible with out a 2-1/2 height guage that is used to acurrately measure height/backlash/etc, the magnetic base for it and the knowledge of how to set back lash and proper contact pattern.

- I'm not trying to argue with anyone. I do/have set-up several r&p's, I build transmissions, motors, transfer cases, suspension systems and chassis'.
