700R4 Question

Car holds gear quite nicely when banging gears through 1-2-3 but when left in D the vehicle tends to shift very early in the rpm band from 1-2 and also from 2-3. The car accelerates quite nicely but the 1-2 shift in D at WOT seems weak (shift takes place @ 2000 rpm) Is this quite normal with this transmission or should it be looked at.

Thanks

Paul

I would be interested to learn what type of shift point people are experiencing with their vehicles @ WOT when the shifter is left in D?

The governor springs in the tranny decide when its time to shift (WOT) Messing with the TV cable other then normal adjustment is just asking for damage. Leaving it in D and OD wont make a differance. It wont shift into 4th at WOT.

There are a few reputable shops here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada that I can have a TV cable inspected and adjusted. Perhaps it would be worth a visit. Car accelerates nicely when manually shifting vehicle but the question remains whether or not the vehicle is shifting to early in the rpm band. I have not had to much experience with automatic vehicles but for example my father's car when left in drive and hammered pulls hard in the rpm band and seems to shift at peak horespower for instance.

If i were you, id get a ratchet shifter and a fully manual shift kit. Improves the tranmission life quite a bit, and you decide when to shift, no messing around with spring tensions or TV cables. Will be around $200 with parts and installation. But dont mess around with that TV cable, the shift points are determined with springs like mentioned above.

if it's a street car a manual vb is not the way to go. - You can check/adjust the TV cable very easily yourself(do a search, it's been covered many times). - Once it's properly adjusted, take it for a spin and see how it shifts. If it still needs the shift points raised, then you need to re-calibrate the governor to tune it to your shift points(rpm). - These kits can be had for around $40 summit/jegs/etc.
- as stated, there is only one proper adjustment for the TV cable, it should not be used to adjust shift points.

...also, most 700r's will shift firmer during manual shifting because the vb ups the line pressure when in 1/2/3 under manual control.
