our ring gear bolts are 7/16 20-Left hand thread right? (ARP part #230-3002) I have the 7.625 rear. Im Doing a overhaul with a auburn series 3 carrier and motive 3.73 gears. i was wondering if it would be different. been screwed over on the parts over and over again. im not paying gm 100 bucks for 10 bolts.

Since you're doing a "rebuild" with new carrier and gears, and you therefore have one of these right here on hand, why not just use the bolts that come in it?

you got screwed if it didn't. that'd be like not getting any bearings in the rebuild kit.

Look at the contents of the one I posted.

Order it, you can have it the next day if you order it Mon - Fri.

let's not

That's what's called the "sunk cost fallacy"..... you spend money on something, it doesn't work, you continue to spend money in a pattern based on "I've already got such and such money into it, all I need is this one little thing", then you dicover one more thing and one more and one more, and by the time you FINALLY have something that works, you've spent more than if you had just cut your losses the instant you found out that the first thing was a left turn and just bought the right thing. Sounds like he's already been down that dirt road and into the weeds more than once in this project, from his comments.

It's kind of like "saving money" by not fixing your brakes when they start making noise, and letting the noise go on until they stop working altogether. Life doesn't work like that, even though at the time it seems like a good idea (or even, seems unavoidable because you're "on a budget").

The original poster has a near $200 gear set, and a $400 or so posi, if it's all new. I don't know what all other parts he's already bought, i.e. what kind of "kit" he could possibly have, that is so incomplete; but I'm betting that if he doesn't have new ring gear bolts, there's other things he also doesn't have that he just hasn't realized yet. Like maybe pinion or carrier shims, for instance, or a new pinion nut. A kit for $85 that contains EVERYTHING sure beats putting it together for "too cheeep" and having it explode on him.

In other words, time to back-track to the orignal left turn where he got lost, and go straight this time.

yes, his kit could be missing more parts, but you didnt ask.. you just told him to break out the credit card like you usually do.. this i dont understand

I dont know what kind of job you have or had, or if it just has taken you 40 years to build 1 car, but some of us like to eventually drive these things
and eat, and have a place to live, and heat in the winter, stuff like that, that also costs money..

$80 on a new kit, when who knows he could have spent $100 on the kit he already has, that he probably cant return.. sounds like crap if its possible you could just get some bolts for $40.. otherwise you have another kit sitting around, that if ever turns out you need to use, you will STILL have to buy some bolts for

if I had to go back to the beginning every time I made a wrong turn, well thats just not possible, nothing would ever get done because I make alot of wrong turns ;p

I find this alot like your "If you cant afford todo it right the first time, can you afford todo it twice" philosophy.. its nice on paper, but you fail to realize most of the time your talking to people who are doing something for their first time.. how many people put together an engine by themselves for the first time and everything gos great? totally possible, but I wouldnt want to be the guy who just spent $5000 on it just to find out I dont know what im doing yet

and I apologize in advance for polluting your thread, I was however curious to know if the bolts could be picked up for cheap

I believe ARP 230-3002 would work. Probably about $80 hanging on the wall at Mopac.

Maybe not everyone does it right the first time, but the person with the greatest chance for success is the one who used the right parts to begin with instead of trying to make do with what they already had.
