Whining noise
I have an 87 z28, 305 with the 5 speed (don't know what code it is, i'm brand new to the 3rd gen scene) and it makes a high pitched whining almost like a supercharger whine. It is loudes at 40mph, regardless of gear and i can hear it throughout all speeds and RPMs. At neutral however there is no noise. Rolling or other wise. If i'm stopped there is also no whining. Figured it was a transmission issue.
when driving, does the whining change pitch when you change gears? it could be a tranny or driveshaft issue. but it could also be your ring and pinion. check the differential out. pop the cover, probably a good time to change the gear oil back there anyways.

yes, the pitch gets higher and higher the faster i go. someone suggested the driveshaft wasnt properly aligned. although the rear end has been checked and nothing wrong was found.
edit:I'm sorry i misread. it gets higher the faster i go, which..goes hand in hand with changing gears so...the higher the gear the higher the pitch due to speed, lower the gear lower the pitch, etc. so on and so forth.

When was the last time someone changed the trans fluid?
If you have no idea, there is your problem. Trans is probably on its way out.
They all leak n drib n drabs like rear ends. Not allot to warrent monthly check or anything but enough so they soon as someone forgets, it bites ya in the butt cause folks only notice the new noise.
I made some comments on fluids here

My stock T5 went out at 204,000 miles

It sounds like a perfectly normal noise in a 3rd gen. Mine has whined like that since I got it at 64k. It now has 125K (ten years later!) and I have never had a problem with it. The rear seal is leaking a bit so I have to keep an eye on the fluid, but other than that, perfect!
Do a search for whining t5 (or something like that) and you will find another post in this forum that deals with the tranny whining. Check it out, it may be helpfiul. Otherwise, take it to a shop or drive it 'till it craps out on you.
If I were you, I wouldn'y worry about it.
That's my $0.02

Wow, now you have me worried. Like I said mine has been whining for like 60k!!!
I am not 100% that it is the tranny, but the noise stops when in neutral and with the clutch in. So, deductive reasoning says tranny. I will do the checks as recomended. Hopefully it's not too late.

When my tranny started whining like that, 3 weeks later it took a dump. Had the exact same symptoms you are having.
