1984 z28 with a 350, needs a new trans
So, I have an 84 that some one droped a 350 into, but its barely drivable due to the worn out syncros. I want to make sure i put a good, strong trans in to replace the stock one.
Is it true you can take the 6-speed tranny out of a 4th gen and bolt it right in?

It's not a "bolt right in" thing, but it's fairly easily do-able. You are deffinitely on the right track of getting rid of the T5 for reliability.
Do a search, it has been covered many times.

Ok, the thing I am seeing alot of is that the speedo will not want to work after this conversion. Is it hard to take the speedo out of a late 3rd gen and stick it into an 84?
The 5 speed was called the T5, made by Borg-Warner
The 6 speed was called the T56, though it's now made by Tremec, I believe it was made by someone else back then?
I was kinda looking over your posts, and it looks like you have your work cut out.
You say you have a '84 Z/28 w/ a 350, and clearly a 5-speed manual.
Your pic shows a dk. red 89ish RS. So it would appear the car has been repainted and the 85-90 nose is on your car, but the headlight "buckets" are body color instead of black. You have a "RS" grille on the nose. It looks like your side ground effects might be the early 82-84 variety though, and your car is wearing mid 80's Corvette wheels. But you have a "flat" RS style hood.
a 350 in your car, swapped in of course is totally doable, after all I have a 350 that I put in my trans am in place of the stock 305.
If you could perhaps post up the cars Vin # and more pics of it?? I'm quite interested in finding out the truth of this car.
just pics alone might give us an idea of whats going on here. pics of front, sides, back, inside and your gauges on the dash would all lead to telling what your car truely is.
Also you can pull ID #s off the engine block too to verify what it is.

I pick up the car saturday, and I will post a TON of pictures.
Wow, I get another car that doesnt have a specific year, type, or anything of the sort, SWEET!
Im honestly exieted that you cant just look at it and say its a 84 Z28, or whatever. I cant wait to start working on it.
I will post the #s as soon as I get them. I am glad to hear some one else is interested in figuring this thing out
Now, you said that the tranny is made by Borg-Warner, so would a T5 from a mustang that is also a T5, would that be exactly the same?

The T5 and the T56 were both made by Borg Warner until Tremec bought out that division of borg warner, so now they're both technically Tremec.
Yes, the 4th gen 6 speed is the T56. You can get a take out stock unit and you can get refurb stock units, refurb upgraded units, or brand new stock units, or brand new upgraded units. It all depends on how much you can afford to spend and what you want out of the trans. - Like I said, hit that search key, it's been covered several times before.

Or you may be talking about the speedometer's reading correctly. The late thirdgens, starting in 88, IIRC, was still equipped with T5's--the so-called world class T5 since it's a bit stronger. In perhaps 90, someone jump in if I'm incorrect, T5's had a vehicle speed sensor (VSS). Swap this latter out for a earlier model drive and/or driven gear, the one(s) that match your rear gears and you're good to go.
