Reluctor-speedo gear question?
I have a '92 RS camaro that I just bought a junk yard transmission for, which I'll be doing a complete overhaul on. My dilemma is that the junk yard tranny uses a reluctor style VSS and my current one uses the mechanical gears with the VSS to drive my electric speedo. My question is can I use the reluctor one that's already there with the proper VSS or do I have to transfer my geared one? I have to change the tailhousings anyway so I suppose its no big deal either way. Thanks for the help and advice!

I know going from a gear to the reluctor wheel will not work for the LT1 computer so I would say the reluctor wheel won't work for the TPI computer. Thre is a definate Pule Per Mile difference between them. It is very easy to pull the ring off and use the plastic gear instead. Like you said, your already there.
Are you sure the junkyard tranny is a 700r4? From the way you described the VSS, it sounds more like a 4L60E. If it is a 4L60E, the speedo will be the least of your issues, since these trannys don't have a TV cable, and the thirdgen ECM can't control the shifts either. Or maybe it's a 700r4 out of a Caprice or something?

It is definately a 700r4. I already had the valve body apart, the only "electronics" is the TCC. This tranny came out of an S-10.
Hmmmm, that brings up another potential problem. If it's a V6 700r4, it won't bolt up to your 305 V8.
At least the F-body V6 700r4's are different anyways (bellhousing pattern is smaller). Not positive about the S10 version.

A 4.3L trans will bolt onto to a V8. The problem is that you will have a physically internally weaker trans and it is not suggested. The smaller amount of clutches will get hotter quicker and the trans will most likely not last long behind a V8.

I'm putting a performance rebuild kit in it before it ever sees my car. all the internals will be new. Here's the kit in case anyone is interested! Thanks.
