Are 10 bolt axles tapered?
I want to narrow my 10 bolt rear end and send my axles to Moser to have them shortened and resplined. This can be done to axles that are not tapered. Does anyone know if the 10 bolt axles are tapered?

Darn....I was hoping they were not tapered.
Shagwell,
Thanks for the information. I am building a fairly hot Triumph TR7 with a 300 horsepower 4.3 Chevy V6 and 5 speed Tremec. I am using a rebuilt 10 bolt because I want to use some 3rd gen Camaro suspension pieces. A shortened Spohn Torque arm set-up, a custom panhard bar and control arms have been aquired and are in the plan. The plan is to basically duplicate a well executed 3rd/4th gen rear set-up. The 3rd gen rear alreadly has provisions for the torque arm. A well built 10 bolt will easily handle the 300 horsepower in a 2500 lb car but I need it shortened about 2" on both sides. I guess it's time to pony up for the custom sized axles.

Even if they weren't tapered, you couldn't shorten them. You can't shorten a c-clip axle unless it was converted to c-clip eliminators and there isn't many of those available for the 7.5" 10 bolt.
New aftermarket axles are cheap. Just buy some Moser axles in whatever size/style you want. Providing you can even find someone to shorten the axles, it can cost almost as much as buying new axles.
My current 9" diff has Strange axles in it. My new narrowed 9" diff for my upcoming back half project has Moser axles. I like the Moser axles a lot more than the Strange axles.

Sorry, I have nothing productive to add to this post, but I just have to know why you can't shorten a c-clip axle. If he needs 2 inches shorter it seems you would just cut it, then machine a new spline and groove for the c-clip. I don't see the problem. I work in the aero industry so maybe this is normal to me.

I don't know why either, novatuc. Assuming your axle is not tapered, Moser does the resplining and machining the groove for the C clip is a simple machining operation.

Oh yeah...from a practical stand point, you are right. When Moser first started this service was cheap and forged axles were very pricey. It was more practical.
Were talking feasability from a machining stand point and not so much a practical reason why it wouldn't be done. I can't see why it couldn't be done from a machining stand point.

just to let you know, i had a set from a '90 camaro shortened about 6" and resplined w/ c-clip grooves back in '00. at first i sent them to currie, but they couldn't do it and they then sent it over to moser. it cost $90. it worked well for the application. i sold that rear a few years back, but i know it is still running to this day.
