Swapped to carb...now tranny doesnt shift right...
I cant help but think its the TV cable, but its such a strange problem. My friend who also did a carb swap has the same problem. When you drive normally it shifts fine (I actually would like it just a tad later and harder, its a bit soft right now) but when I hammer it, it decides to shift at like 3500 or earlier. Also, sometimes if I nail it, it won't downshift. It will just start going from where it is. Could it be my TV cable? I dont even know where to start with this one.

what did you have before, whas it stock. and which carb did you switch to.. all helpful to know.. Some notes though. the Carb TV cable was the shortest one of the bunch (there were 3 cables). no matter how much you try to adjust one from say a tbi or an FI setup, it will not adjust right. Second, what carb did you switch to. if it was a holley did you get the required TV cable bracket that fits on the end of the trottle level that you attach the TV cable to/ if not, one again no matter what you do it will not be adjusted right... and you WILL burn the trans up... not sure on the edlebrocks.

im using the tpi tv cable. and i have a holley carb with the holley bracket for 700r4s and the extra bracket to correct the tv geometry. still no luck.

as long as you have the bracketry to correct the geometry its just a matter of proper adjustment. Their is about a million threads here on adjustment and even websites just for this!
Improper TV cable adjustment can cook a tranny in a hurry, i would get this sorted out before you drive it much more!

right but i got the geometry correcter. and i have basically adjusted it everywhere from fully out to fully in. normal condition shifts change, but wot is still at about 3500 no matter what. my friend said he ground down the weights in the governor to raise the wot shift, and kept the normal driving shift normal. what about that?

so pull it out a click or two towards the radiator? and also, its shifting like 100 rpm early normally, not that much. but even when i had it shifting late at normal, it still shifted at like 3500 at wot. the tranny was rebuilt like less than 200 miles ago. and i know its mine cause i saw him start it and it was completely gone before the rebuild (governor problem actually) and then it tanked.

the TPI cable will NOT work crrectly with a Carb. you need the carb cable. the TPI cable is about 2.5 to 3 inches longer or so... you have to buy a cable for a Carb application. not for a TPI application. there is a reason why there were different cables for different applications. simply because one will not work with the other because of the length. using a TPI cable on a carb is a good way to burn up the trans in a short time, reguardless of the proper geometry. It is just to long and not giving proper line pressue to the trans.
(basically it is impossible for your carb to pull the TV cable out far enough in order to give it the proper line pressure to shift properly.)
I have experience in this from swapping in an 89 or so Transmission with the TV cable from the donor car in it still. Donor was a TPI....My car is a Holley 4160 with all the correct hardware. it would not work. Put a carb TV cable on it and it works flawlessly.

ok, thank you. i just figured the distance from the clip to the stud was the same so it would be fine even though the actual cable was longer. ill get right on it.
