89 9 bolt with disc
I've got an 89 iroc with a 9 bolt disc rear. Gears are 277 or 273 don't remember rpo off hand(5.7,700r4). Anyway,I wanted to put 373/370's in the rear. Problem is I have a 2 series carrier with the stock gears. I've heard that the 3 series carrier/gears are no longer available. So do I now own a boat anchor? I wanted to keep the 9 bolt because of its strength and the rear disc set up. What are my options?

you'd spend half the cost of a 9" to put gears, a posi carrier, install time etc into the rear end. buy a 3.73 10 bolt or save for a 9" for around $2k

after pricing out a new carrier/posi, the gears, the install kit, and the labor to install these things I was looking at $1200-1400 depending on what gears I chose. Might as well spend $2k and get a 9" that won't break on 99.99% of us on here. Otherwise 10 bolts have been in 82-02 camaros, the 93-02 ones are slightly wider, but you can use 4th gen wheels on the rears instead and bolt up some 2" spacers to the fronts. I just sold my perfect 9 bolt with 3.27 gears and all new brakes from calipers to rotors for $350 to someone on here since I need 4.30 gears which a 9 bolt doesn't offer.
If you want to keep the 9 bolt, your best bet would be to keep trolling the classifieds here and search on ebay as well. Used 3 series carriers come up for sale quite often. Also since you're looking to go to the 3.70 ratio, I wouldn't even worry if the used carrier comes with a ring and pinion since the largest factory ratio was 3.45 anyways. You'll have to buy the gears new from the aftermarket suppliers. A buddy of mine just got a good 3 series carrier from a guy on the classifieds here a few weeks ago for a reasonable price. His came with a 3.27 ring gear that we're just going to throw away since there was no pinion gear with it. I probably saw about 3 or 4 different ones listed when we were looking for his, so they do come up for sale quite often.

+1
Do what i did. I have a 89 9 bolt rear with 2.77 2 series. I found a used 3 series carrier with 3.27 gears. I wanted 3.70s but thought they may be too much gear so kept the 3.27s. Bought a install kit with new bearings for 120 bucks. the posi and gears i bought for around 140 shipped. had them put in for 150. so thats 410 bucks installed with all the parts i needed. not bad but it only lasted alittle over a year before i broke the posi on slick launches.
now i got a 00 LS1 trans am 10 bolt rear end with 3.42's. I love it

Hey Orr89RocZ, can you tell me the website or phone number to the place you got the install kit from I've found a couple but there prices are from $150-$180. Thanks, Mcarnicle
I was reading through Drain 89's long sticky post about 9 bolt info the other night and he said he found the best prices on 9 bolt installation kits through Reider Racing. They have a website at www.reiderracing.com.

Yeah I was looking at that the other night they don't have any prices so I guess I'll give them a call today, thanks for your help.
