CA SMOG + Auto to Manual swap .....
I did a quick search and didn't find anything here on this subject. I have an '88 IROC with the 5.7 TPI/700R4. I, like many other owners, wondered what the 5.7 would be like if it had the T-5 or T-56 instead(Less wieght, more b.h.p.). I was told by my friend/mechanic that if I try to swap my 5.7 IROC from 700R4 to T-5 or T-56 it may not pass smog. This friend I speak of knows nothing of PROM, so I wonder, is there something in PROM that tells the computer as to wether it's auto or manual for smog?If so, I should be able to burn a PROM chip for this purpose, right? Thanks, I'm new to PROM. Daniel U

Only certain engine/trans combos are CARB certified. One of the combos that is NOT certified, is the 350/stick combo. It will not pass the visual inspection, for sure. The smog referree might pass it.
Kevin 91Z or Dyno Don might be able to tell you what they had to do to get theirs smogged, or even if they were able to, after doing that swap; they're in OC.

I'm not sure who you talked to, but our smog guy says the transmission isnt part of the emissions test. It doesnt matter what tranny you have. We have T56's clearly marked with the shifter plate and nobody says a word about it.
Yes there is values in the chip that signify automatic or manual trans. Specifically, its parts of the IAC settings, the decelleration fuel/spark table, and other various little things. Yes you can definitely burn a prom for this. Start with a 305 5-speed prom and change the injector constants.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I just wanted to be for sure before I do something that big and costly. My goal(s) is/are to have a 350 B.H.P. CA. smog legal car under or at 3000 lbs. that appears stock from under the hood to the average guy/gal. It should be interesting to see how I get there and at what cost. Thanks again, Daniel U

I did some more research and found that there's a difference between NWC and WC T-5's that were found in the 305/T-5 combos from GM. It looks like a WC is better and found in '88 and newer F bodies. Should I worry about this or maybe an aftermarket T-5 would be better in the long run. I know there are plenty of companys that would take my $. Any suggestions for a 350BHP application? I want it to look stock from the driver's seat. Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance, Daniel U

You definitely want a WCT5. It will last if you dont race the car. Otherwise, get a Tremec T5 (called a TKO, I think), the Chevy version, not the Ford, and race it all you want.

Get in touch with Fortes Parts Connection. They're the ones who originally came up with the Tremec TKO conversion for thirdgens. They should be able to set you up with everything you need. It's going to run you in the neighborhood of $2000-$2500 for a complete kit though. If that's too high for your budget, it'd be a lot cheaper to do a WC T5. You get what you pay for though, the TKO's are damn near bulletproof.

Thanks for the info, I just emailed them. This is a complete kit? I want to look factory OEM from inside. Thanks, Daniel U
Oh yeah, you can make it look bone stock inside the car. They can even supply you with the black, round shifter stick that's threaded for the factory leather ****. If you used that along with the stock T5 shifter plate/boot, nobody would be the wiser.

Sweet, I just emailed them. I hope this will work out for me. It'll be a while as I need to finish my 54 to have another driver before I do the engine rebuild, trans. swap and carbon fiber driveline.

i did a manual swap from a 03 infiniti manual coupe to a 04 infiniti automatic sedan. I used manual harness, manual ecu car starts and runs perfect, no check engine light only light is “AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION “ im wondering if it will pass smog? Or should i change the manual cluster into the car aswell and will it make a difference

This is a site for 82-92 Camaro & Fiorebird. This doesn't include Infiniti.
I suggest you consult a Nissan/Infiniti forum for info specific to the particular car like that.
