I'd guess your tranny mount is shot. 30 minute repair if the bolts come off willingly... the mount probably $25-$50 depending on which you choose.

A rubber stock replacement one is at the lower end of the price scale. It will tear eventually, just like the original one did. A urethane one will cost more, but last forever.

My '97's shifter moved a lot when I bought it, so I got a Polyurethane tranny mount from Energy Suspension, I think it was $45 from Summit. The polyurethane ones don't have a lot of freeplay so you get more power down to the ground. The only real disadvantage is that there will be a little more road noise transferred to the chassis and the first 500 miles or so while it breaks in you will feel the engine vibrations a lot more. Overall a great mod in my eyes.
All you really have to do to swap them is support the tranny with a jack, losen the crossmember bolts, remove the old mount, bolt in new mount and tighten up all the bolts.

Yup....I had the same issue 3xs with the OEM rubber one on my '86 T/A. The 305/700R4 was brutal on it. I broke down and got a Energy Poly mount and it has lasted through 3 trannys, a 355 swap and 9 years of use. Best $25 ever spent.
