Building 700R4 for 383. Give me parts run down on what I need to upgrade
Hi guys, I am going to built a 700R4 myself for my 383 engine I'm putting together. I have built RWD automatic transmissions before, and lots of manual 4/5spds, but never a 700R4 specifically.
What parts will I need to handle a 10:1 383 w/ aftermarket 200cc runner iron heads and multiport EFI?
I'm seeing things like servos (not the corvette servo, there are better servos w/ more holding power than the vette one), 5 pinion planets, better sprag, 13 vane pump, kolene clutches, better bands, shift kit, 0.500" TV boost valve, etc.
A complete run down would be great so I can try to get suppliers to put together a package price for everything I will need.
Thanks!!!

That kit looks okay but the street/strip, for $500, still uses just the vette servo and a 10 vane pump.

I agree talk to ProBuilts or someone that specializes in the 700R4. I'm on my third transmission and it has started to slip.

dana at pro built can put together pretty much anything that you want. i called him and told him all the specs of my motor and the hp output. i basically told him to send me what i need. im very confident in his choice. what i trying to get at here is that just because his kits include things that you may or may not like, doesnt mean that he cant put together a kit that has everything you want. give him a call, you got nothing to loose. good luck

For the last few weeks we have made some comparison tests on a 4L60E w/383ci. with 150-400 shot of nitrous (in stages). We did some dyno testing, to get some HP numbers, then it went to the strip. First, you know that I have been saying that the Corvette servo along with the TransGo Performance Shift kit will do very well and the bigger 2nd gear servo is not needed till you get into some serious HP. The Corvette servo, TransGo Performance Shift kit, .096-.110 feed hole, no spacers in 2nd accumulator, & the Borg Warner Hi-Energy 2-4 band. This will hold 750-800FWHP with no problems (over 300 passes). When we added another 50HP, the shifts started to get long in time duration. We then changed out the Corvette servo and added the Sonnax 2nd gear apply servo (not the Superior billet servo) to see what would happen. This servo still uses the cushion springs that will soften the 1-2 part throttle shifts, the billet will not do this, that is why I would never use one. Now adding the additional 50HP did not effect the shift at all. On the next test we will add more HP till the long shift occurs, then we will add the carbon lined extra wide 2-4 band. This vehicle is driven to and from the drags, and is a daily driver. This transmission has a 7 vane setup in the front pump, and does very well. The 13 vane setup will not work in earlier pumps (pumps that did not have a 13 vane setup to start wit) that have not been extensively modified, as they will lose oil volume when compared to a 10 vane setup. The stator half of the pump is where all of the modifications need to be made, if you decide on a 13 vane setup. 10 vane setups have never been a problem, as long as you use the TransGo steel rings and priming spring in the pump. As more information comes out on these tests I will keep everyone up to date. By the way this vehicle has run a best of 9.30-9.40's at 140-144+mph. So do you need more than the Corvette servo, I would say not in the vast majority of cases.

Thanks Dana for the reply. What rpm are you shifting at? My understanding is that higher rpms seem to be a killer for the likes of the 4L60E.
Re: Building 700R4 for 383. Give me parts run down on what I need to upgrade
All three that are in the nine's, one is shifting at over 6,700 rpm, the other two at over 7,200-7,500 rpm.
