Stall speed of Suburban 2wd 700R4 converter?

Hi guys, does anyone know the stall speed of a stock 91 suburban 700R4 2wd "medium stall" converter? I just picked up a gm factory replacement 700R4 with only 1 year use on it for $100 w/ converter. If the converter is 2400 stall or thereabouts I might use it. Anyone know? I couldn't find a real stall # listing for this unit. I have the part # from the label on it, it is DCNF 2420 6164

Thanks

I doubt it's that high. Full size truck converters stall very low to use torque effectively. It's probably 1200-1500 at the most. 1800 would be an extreme for a factory converter.

Thats what I figured, I was dreaming that I wouldn't have to buy a converter. Dammit!! In the trash it goes.

1100 is stock, 1300 is the towing stall. Pretty much worthless from a performance perspective. You can buy a 1998 2wd s10 4.3L stall and install that in your car for a cheap 2200 stall that you can buy from any parts store in the country.

NO WAY

The diesel converters are 1100-1200 rpm stall. The medium stall converters stall right at 1,400-1,600.

Re: Stall speed of Suburban 2wd 700R4 converter?

Stall speed is only one factor of a converter. You can have an 11, 12 and 13" converter all stall at the same speed and they'll all react differently. Internally, a converter has a multiplier. A different multiplier ratio and the converter will perform differently. Just trying to find a factory replacement converter to use as a performance converter is a waste of money. The rated stall speed of a converter is also an estimate. A converter that stalls at 2200 behind one engine may stall at 2500 behind another or 1800 behind another. It all depends on how much torque is being put into the converter.

Torque converters are one thing that you can actually say the more expensive ones are better and you get what you paid for. The 8" race converter in my car is worth close to $1000.
