computerized tranny

Yea so i got this 4L60 tranny mounted on my LT1. I'm going old school the LT1 is getting a carb'd manifold. I need to know if i can get away with murder here. I wanna know if i could make that comp tranny to an old school tranny. If so i will be the happiest man alive. If not i got another tranny. I just wanna keep the other tranny mostly because the gears in it are pushing a ton of torq 495 lbs. so yea.

Thanks for your time.

Re: computerized tranny

Do you have a 4L60 or a 4L60E? there is a difference

A 4L60 is a renamed 700R4 with just a couple changes for the TCC which may or may not be needed. In 93 the 4L60 was electronically controlled.

Re: computerized tranny

the only thing electric in a 4l60, '93 or '92 and earlier, that is electrically controlled is the lock-up solenoid.all shift functions arestill controlled by the govenor and hydraulics.

if it is a '94 trans am, then it has the 4l60e which is electronically controlled from the factory. there is a way to make it old school. get hold of Dana(Pro Built Automatics) and he can explain it to ya.

Re: computerized tranny

IIRC the 4L60E was rated to handle up to 360 ft/lb of torque. If it is in bone stock form and you are making 495 ft/lb you will possibly grenade it in short order. 94 Impala would be a 4L60E. I don't believe you can make it "old school" but you can get a stand alone computer to to run the trans in a non computer controlled vehicle.

I wasn't completely accurate. the 4l60E was on trucks, vans and SUV's in 93, 94 was the first year in pass cars. I was close.

Re: computerized tranny

so i could never get my 383 lt1 to run, so i converted it to carbed. now i have a 4l60e from a 94 ta in it. computer is not hooked up. it will go into gear, but i dunno if it will shift. dont want to buy the stand alone, because i have a 700r4 being rebuilt as we speak... problem is it is in colorado, and i am in georgia. i am trying to get this thing to run old school to.

Re: computerized tranny

A 4L60E will not shift w/o the computer. Yes, park/rev/neutral/forward are shifted mechanically, but it will not function. I've heard that low gear will engauge w/o the wiring, but I'm sure nothing else will. - Some trans shops offer a manual valvebody, thus giving you full manual control, but this is not a good idea for a street driven vehicle. The only other options is either a stand alone trans control computer or adapting the sensors and "piggy backing" the factory ecu just to control the trans.
