700R4 TV Boost valve install tips help etc.

I have the pan, valve body off of my 93 700R4 and am installing a shift kit and boost valve. Does anyone have pictures, links etc on installing the boost valve?
Its the .500 inch valve for higher line pressure.
Thanks

Push the valve up with a screwdriver and pop off the snap ring. Work the valve a bit with your finger and it should fall out. The rev boost valve, spring and regulator valve will also fall out.
Reinstalling it is the tricky part. Be absolutely sure the snap ring is back in the groove properly. Otherwise, as soon as you start the car, pressure will blow everything into the pan.

Thanks, does the spring have allot of pressure when installing this? How many grooves are there, for the snap ring?

Medium pressure spring. Nothing hardcore.
Just one groove for the snap ring.

Thanks. I also understand the Corvettes, starting in 93 had the .471 valve. Is this true, if so would the .500 make a difference?

I already answered that in the e-mail
At the very least, you have a .420 valve.
I only use .500 in hardcore strip cars.

Re: 700R4 TV Boost valve install tips help etc.

Sounds like you are doing the valve with the tranny in the car. This makes it more difficult then with the trans on the bench. The reason that so many folks put the snap ring in the wrong location is that the boost valve likes to hang up.

As the valve assembly is pushed into the bore it has a habit of stopping (on something, what I don't know). There is a spot in the bore where the diameter changes, and is right below a hung-up boost valve. Bam, in goes the smap ring. Which then promptly blows out once the pressure builds.

To get the boost valve in with the trans in the car, it needs to be jiggled into the bore. Once up in place the snap ring can be inserted. Problem now is, how can you do this while holding the boost valve in place with one hand, picking up the snap ring pliers with the other hand (you did pre-load the snap ring onto the pliers, correct?), and getting it into place.

Trick is to get a metal rod about 1/4 to 3/8" diameter. Needs to be the length from the bottom of the boost valve to the garage floor. Or a little longer as it can be angled. Once the valve is in place, locate the rod on the bottom of the valve and wedge it against the garage floor. Now you have two hands to put the snap ring in place. And can rest that weary arm that just jiggled the stupid valve for 10 minutes getting it past the hang up point.

Can also use a wood dowel, but need to be careful of splinters breaking off. They will need to be carefully cleaned out of the tranny before reassembly.

RBob.

If the snap ring pops out and all the pieces go into the pan, have you ever lost the snap ring? It has allot of places to go.

Re: 700R4 TV Boost valve install tips help etc.

Since I just went through this yesterday, I've got pics. First the diagram (from TransGo kit):

This is what it looks like when everything is in the correct place. The black circular line that is just above the snap ring is a tapered reduction in bore diameter. Don't make the mistake of sliding in the snap ring until it hits this or you will end up with everything in the pan and very low pressure (don't ask how I know this). Make REALLY REALLY sure the snap ring is in the groove, like so:

Thanks for posting that pic.
I don't know how you guys do this valve w the trans in the car. I did it with the pump in my lap, gravity on my side, and it was difficult. I put my built trans in next week, can't wait to see it work.
I made a couple videos on the subject, here is one with the torque converter lock up wiring.

Once the .500" boost valve is installed, and the snap ring in place, you will be able to push up the boost valve another 1/16" of an inch here. The boost valve will have a little up and down play when installed correctly.

Re: 700R4 TV Boost valve install tips help etc.

Reviving an old thread, but this might help someone putting a boost valve in working on the floor. I couldn't hold the valve in place and maneuver the snap ring in place. I used a long 3/8 ratchet extension and a small bottle jack. Just put the snap ring over the extension, get the valve started in its bore, hold it in place with the extension, and slide the bottle jack in under it. Then you can use the jack to hold the valve in place, and slide up the snap ring and seat it in the groove.
I wasted over an hour screwing around, trying to hold it in by hand, and had it in in 5 minutes once I figured this out.

Re: 700R4 TV Boost valve install tips help etc.

I had problems holding the boost valve in place while putting in the snap ring and came up with a similar solution:
