Yes. It consists of cutting a hole.

Re: auto to stick

so at the factory, the GM workers would get an order for a manual tranny, and break out the cutting torch, if any one can tell me what the hole is for, (clutch linkage, tranny mount) i would appreciate it

i have to make up my mind on this pretty quick, and dont know if i would be better off to try and find one with a manual, car is very clean and highly optioned, only asking 3000

no, the people on the assembly line are not a bunch of hacks. The shifter hole on the top of the tras tunnel was stamped into the piece during construction.

you need a hole for the clutch master cylinder, it goes under the dash. If you crawl down there and pull the carpet back from behind the pedals you will see a cut-out of the hole pattern that you need to cut, and it is just about in the right spot. its a oval shaped hole, about 1 1/4" wide and maybe 3" tall.

You also need a hole for the shifter to come up through. its about 5 x 7 and it goes about right under where the shifter is now.

aside from the holes you need all the 5 speed conversion parts and this is all laid out in the tech section under the 5 speed swap article

If its in good shape and a real Iroc, 3k isnt bad, 5 speed cars are a little hard to come by with a v8.

Re: auto to stick

I converted my 88 IROC convertible to a tremec tko about 4 years ago. I used a Lakewood bellhousing, RAM clutch, and stock hydraulics. I went to the wreckers and found a stripped chassis for a 3rd gen stick and measured the position of the hole for the master and made a cardboard pattern. Used a drill and a die grinder to make the holes in the firewall and the driveshaft tunnel. There were no markings on mine. If you do go the Lakewood route and a TKO, in my case I didn't use the adaptor plate so my shifter location was too far forward. I modified the shifter mount (just the bar) to push it about 1" to the rear.

It is a nice conversion and well worth the effort - the only problems I have had are with the lakewood adjustable clutch fork pedestal (it shook loose and is too fragile for the clutch I am running) and the GM hydraulics which ruptured on me yesterday - thats my next project.

If your serious about this I would be glad to answer any questions you might have on the install.

Good Luck!

Re: auto to stick

thanks, 3zman i really appreciate the offer and will probably take you up on that one day, i ended up buying a 92 z28 that is white with a black interior (charcoal seats and door panels) paid out 4100 for the car, it also has the original L98 and 700R4, runs great, body is almost perfect and the interior just needs the dash top replaced, I caught a bus saturday night and rode from east texas to virginia., bought the car and drove it back, i got here tuesday and since then i have had the A/C fixed (including going from R12 to 134A) the timing set and the windows tinted and tommorow the headliner is being replaced, and all that makes a grand total of 5750. So for the moment i am tapped out. i will start a new thread when i get some pics, this is my fifth third gen and i love it. hope to take it cruisin with my wife and kids this weekend.
