New 3:42 gear now this
I had the 2:73 dead gear taken out of my 1991 Formula and had a 3:42 put in this past weekend. The car ran pretty good, a little rougher than before. But I am in Miami and not able to punch up to speed to test until this morning. I was able to punch and hit high speed, but I hear my rear end wheels making a loud spinning noise and car was not as free as before in feel with the throttle, is this normal?? Any helpful comments please. I already called the shop and they told me to bring it back, what should I know so I look like I know I am saying so they can correct it. Thanks! Andy

Gears were not set up correctly. Sounds like they are way off. Not too many guys are really good at setting up gears. Gears w/ incorrect pinion depth will get loud at higher speeds.

Also, the chance of these guys getting the gears right a 2nd time, if they didn't get it even close the first time, will be a crap shoot. Been there done that, now I set them up myself. Good luck.

Some aftermarket gears do have a slight noise as opposed to a GM or Ford orig gearset. But it is usually minimal at best. Excessive noise if from improper setup no matter what brand. Most are lazy when setting them up and only will adjust the carrier shiming. Since the pinion will have to be removed to shim it, they half-a$$ do it.

The noise aftermarket gears make should be very minimal, as in, you can't hear it with the AC fan blowing on high. It sounds like his are hosed. I don't know why some places even bother setting up gears ... badly set up performance ratio gears are worse than stock quiet gears, unless you only run 1/4 miles and trailer the car.
