Shift kit....

I want to get a shift kit for my 700r4 but i don't know what to get... i've heard Transgo is good and that B&M is not the way to go but the main thing i'm wondering is if i buy a shift kit do i have to drop my tranny to install it or can it all be installed from the underside? I've seen a shift improver kit that claims to put hard shifts in but idk Anyone have any expierience?

Re: Shift kit....

There is a good thread on shift kits in the aftermarket product review section. Most shift kits can be installed with the trans installed in the vehicle.

Re: Shift kit....

Hey, I have a B&M shift kit in my '85 Z28 and it feels way better than the stock one. I got it at parts of America, and I didn't have to drop the tranny to install it. I also heard that corvette servos are good in these trannys. Are you still parting out that '92 camaro? If so I could use some interior parts and possibly the ground FX. I live in Phelps, NY- so maybe we can meet up and do some business. Email me when you can. Thanks. Paul pansuini@rochester.rr.com

Re: Shift kit....

Not sure about the servo, but the shift kit took about 3 hrs at Sunoco in Geneva. He dropped the pan- took some stuff out and drilled some holes, then put it back together. Had to replace the filter, gasket and fluid too, but overall it wasn't bad and helped the tranny a lot. How about those camaro parts too? Is the car gone or what? Let me know ASAP. Thanks.

Re: Shift kit....

Not hard if you have any mechanical experience. Follow the instructions and have planty of time on your hands. Help is also beneficial on putting the valve body back up. Read the instructions PRIOR to doing is a few times to get familiar and have time to think of what you might need. TransGo and Superior are the best kits. From experience the B&M 'crash-bang' kit isnt going to make your tranny last. Adding a vette servo is almost a gimme when doing a kit. Superiors 700-R4 HP kit comes with it for $90. Seperately they are $20-$40 almost anywhere (Superior, Trans Parts houses, GM Dealer, Ebay). Servo takes about 30 to 1Hr depending on you skill level. And dropping the crossmember, having help to shift the back over is probably gonna be needed. http://sethirdgen.org/servo.htm Here is a Basic How To on it.

Re: Shift kit....

The servo is the part responsible for taking the fluid pressure given, and pushing/appying the 2-4 band. This is your 2nd gear shift apply and your 4th gear apply. The assembly has 2 pistons. The 2nd apply piston and the 4th. The Corvette servo is the name for the upgraded 2nd apply piston assembly. Does notinhg for 4th. Since the diameter of the center is larger (see the link and the pictured comparison of the 2 servos), the outter apply area the fluid forces against is smaller. This creates a quicker and tighter hold on the 2nd gear. So the 2nd gear is applied with no slippage and tighter. 4th servo ireplacement snt required unless you are towing...and towing in OD. A servo replacement weather Billet or Vette is going to give a noticable inprovement, but isnt a replacement for a full kit. In fact, they are accomodating parts in relation to each other. The 2-3 shift is also slightly improved since the release is a little quicker as well. But like the Superior kit, there are accomodating parts for the release, a vette sevo assembly, and other shift improving (progressive with throttle input) and problem correction parts.
