700r4 from olds cutlass

Will a 700r4 from an 84 cutlass work in my 84 camaro. Is the tail shaft the same? Would the drive shaft be the same length? Reason is i can get 2 cutlasses for 200$ ones with a fair running 305 h.o. that was originally from an 86 trans-am i believe. I also get many more parts with it many are new. THanks

Re: 700r4 from olds cutlass

Depends. If its a SBC engine in your F-body and the Cutlass has a SBC, then yes. If its a 307 or otherwise a olds motor, it will have a different bellhousing. The tailshaft for the F-body is specific. But they are interchangable. And if the tranny in the cutlass was from a TA, then it might still have the orig F-body tail anyways. Otherwise you can buy one and put it on.

Re: 700r4 from olds cutlass

ok thanks, but would drive shaft also fit? THing is i have no engine tranny or radiator in my car and if possible id take everything from the cutlass and put it in my camaro. I am not sure if anyone here knows anything about oldmobile but could it be possible the guy is mistaking a 700r4 from 200r4? What tranny did come with them oldmobiles?

Re: 700r4 from olds cutlass

you may have to modify your driveshaft a little bit, but the F-body is made to accept virtually any GM engine (any chev anyway), so yea, if you want to take the Cutlass driveline go for it! Im sure its been done before, we can help you along the way to get it to fit just right. The only other thing i can think of is the torque arm mounting. Maybe someone else can chime in on that part.

If its a Chev V8 then it will definately fit. How do you tell a chev apart from an olds? Few key tell-tale signs.

Chev: Rear distributor, distributor THROUGH the intake manifold. Spark plugs BELOW the exhaust ports, 4 bolts per valve cover, if you can see the back of the engine, the very top of the transmission mounting location has a "peak", ie: looks like a hill, one point.

Olds: Rear distributor, distributor BEHIND the intake manifold. Sparkplugs ABOVE the exhaust ports, 10 bolts per valve cover, top of the tranny has a "valley", ie: if you look at the top of the trans mounting place, you will see two points.

I can show you some pix if u need a visual aid.

Hope that helps.!

are you sure that the olds truly has a 700R4 and not a 2004R? wasn't aware of any 700R4's having a BOP bellhousing in 84

Well im telling him generally, the 700 should not be with an olds, and the 200 should not be with the chev unless an adapter was used.

But even if its a 307, i dont think its that hard to bolt up.

Re: 700r4 from olds cutlass

no, no its a real 305 H.O. from an 86 trans-am i am 100% sure of that, but as for the transission, that is what i am really not sure about, how could you tell if its a 200r4 or 700r4, and if its a 200r4 is it even usuable in my ca without to much work. I am guessing he maybe took the engine and the transmission from an 86 trans am and put it in his olds, cause from what he told me, the transmission isnt the original one.

Re: 700r4 from olds cutlass

If it is an 86 firebird engine he most likely has the 700R4 on it. Check casting #s and make sure his story checks out, lots of people are very mistaken on what they "recall" has been done to an old car like that.

Re: 700r4 from olds cutlass

Get down under the car with a flash light, and check the pan and the tail shaft. The 700R4 pan is a simple square, the 200R4 pan looks more curvy. The 700R4 is a very noticeable 6" tail shaft, the 200R4 is much shorter. However, they both have 16 bolts to the pan, so that wont help counting.

EDIT:

Forgot to mention, in pic #2;

#5 is the 200R4
#6 is the 700R4

Re: 700r4 from olds cutlass

ok thanks guys, but i have also found another great deal, i found a 350 4bbl, has edelebrock intake manifoil and an upgreated ignition (can't remember the name) also come with a turbo 350 and the drive shaft i need for it, will also give me the radiator he wants 400$ for this but i don't know if its all worth it, i know that the engine does smoke a bit but still runs very well. As for tranny i just don't know if it be better than the other one i can get. I don't like the idea of only having 3 gears, on top of that my car originally was a v6 and i still have stock rear diff, although it has already had a 350 in it. It would probably be geared for pretty slow speed aye? Maybe if i could swap the back ones for 3.42's or something. What would you do?
