The 9" is always the best choice. Why do you think so many racers use them. Strongest rear you can get other than custom fabed ones. Plus it is the easist rear to change gears in. Parts are cheap to, that always important.
I am not sure about the weight difference, but considering it will be in the rear I would say that it really doesn't matter.
The 12 bolt would be a great choice also, don't get me wrong, but I just know that a lot of people use the 9" for ease of use.

Hey whats up Don.

http://www.moserengineering.com/mose...s.asp?CatID=14

Moser makes both 9 inch and 12 bolts for your car.. Around 2200-2400 bucks. I would give them a call about prices and what would work best for you.

Curry and Strange also have rears..Let me get some info on them...

Basically it takes a little more h.p. to turn a 9 inch, but there are susposed to be stronger than a 12 bolt.

I know strange offers an upgrade carrier with their 12 bolts, and the standard 12 bolt isnt warrantied, and as you know 1FastFireChicken gernaded his, and also SSRRR gernaded his standard Strange carrier in a few weeks after buying the rear.. I think the upgrade will cost you an additional 400 bucks or so..
I would personally get a 9 inch just for seeing how the 12 bolts dont hold up well with the weaker carriers in them.

The Strange 12 bolt in my car leaked at the pinion no matter what when I tried to fix the damn thing, housing axle tubes leaked at the weld, and it wasnt the best quality, especially for the money.. But this rear was made back when they were still working some bugs ut I guess.

I also have the currie ford 9". Its nice but it was really expensive. like $2400 or close to that. 4.11 gears, 31 slpine, detroit locker. It came with the brakets already bolted on. No matter witch rear end you end up getting ( 9" or 12 bolt) they are both really good and are strong enough to handle just about anything you put in the car.

they are ok, i hear that the borg worner 9 bolt is stronger but the 10 bolt is used in alot of cars. You can see cars with that rear end runing in the 12's. You would have to modify it alittle to have it hold up to big power but that rear end is a good one. They make alot of parts for that rear end so there wont be a problem if and or when you brake something.

This should really be in the transmission/drivetrain forum... and how did 10-bolts get in to this discussion, anyway?

How much power can the 7.5/7.625" ten-bolt handle? Not enough.

You want more information than that? Well, it depends on what tranny you have. The sticks will beat the rear a lot harder than an automatic. I had a T5 when I destroyed the 10-bolt in my 84, and that car was probably high 13s at best at that point. The posi guts just exploded, it looked like someone had shoved a grenade in there and pulled the pin.

The 9-bolts are supposed to be much stronger. I'm putting one behind a 700R4/406 combo soon.

10 & 12 bolts are of the same design. Too much force or abuse will spit the rear gear right out the back. 8.50" 10 bolts & 12 bolts are beefier but still suffer from the same design. The Ford 9" has a beefier, seperated carrier & housing with 3 pinion bearings instead of 2. Ring pinion work is much easier because you can remove the center section & work on it on a bench, not under the car. The price for new gears is around $165. Parts are cheap & plentiful. You can buy the housing & axles from Moser for under $900. Add a used center section & you can have a 9" for under $1200. The main drawback is the 9" is about 50lb heavier than a 12bolt & uses 4% power to turn, where a 12 bolt uses 2.5%.

I ran high 11's on a stock 3.27 geared 9 bolt and my current times are with a beefed up 7.5" 10 bolt.

I've only gone to a 9" this winter because I'm going to be using an 8" converter and a transbrake and I didn't think the 7.5" could handle more than one hit from that.

I'm all for a 9 bolt for applications deep into the 11's (maybe even to mid 10's with a girdle). But then again, I have a biased opinion, but if you want a bullit proof rear, the only choice is a 9 inch which will run around 2500 complete.

What used 9" ford rear ends will work with our cars. I have an 88 GTA with the BW 9 bolt 3.27s. Either thinking about getting a used 9" or splurging and getting a new one. Where can I find the cheapest new 9" rear end.
