Axle Question

I have just purchased a 89 5.7 tpi IROC Z with the disc rear and have a question. On the driver side the axle shaft is bent right where the studs go and I need to know whether a drum axle with fit in the rear end. I haven't ran the rpo codes yet so I don't know gearing, splines or none of the info on it. It is a automatic car and has under 100k. Let me know guys as I can't drive it until this is repaired or replaced.

Re: Axle Question

You may have a 9 bolt diff. Only an axle from another 9 bolt will fit.

Re: Axle Question

So it doesn't matter if it is a drum or disc axle so long as it's from a 9 bolt rear. That's what's in it also a 9 bolt.

Re: Axle Question

First of all, good luck finding a replacement axle. 9 bolts are not that common.

The only difference "might" be the center pilot on the axle. A drum and disk axle may have a different diameter pilot. I never checked when I had a 9 bolt and when I had a 10 bolt, I was using aftermarket axles which worked for both drum and disk.

It may be easier and cheaper to find a 10 bolt to put under the car.

Re: Axle Question

It does have a 2.77 ratio and a 9 bolt cover. D^^^!!! Is it honestly going to be that hard to find one?

Re: Axle Question

Yes. They were only available from 87-89 and only a few models from each year had a 9 bolt. Aftermarket parts are just about non-existent unless you go to Australia.

It is a bit stronger than a 10 bolt but with the lack of any aftermarket parts, it's not worth anything if it needs repair. You "may" luck out and find one in a junk yard.
