Ford 9" or Gm 12 Bolt??

Probably a stupid question, but what is the major difference between a Ford nine inch and a GM 12 bolt...other than the manufacturer obviously!! What are the advantages to installing either one?? I have a 92' Z and can't decide which one I want to get. I appreciate any help...

The Ford 9in is the most heavy duty, but also weighs more and is slightly less efficient. The 12 bolt is strong but not as strong as the 9in and weighs a little less and is more efficient. Either one is a good choice and huge upgrade over the stock 10 bolt.

What about the new Moser M9 bolt in...here's the link http://www.moserengineering.com/Page...s-moserm9.html

I still have my 10 bolt, but will probably scrap it. can I transfer my rear disc set up to a new 9" or 12 bolt??

M9 is 9in based. Its total overkill for anything but a wild racecar. 9" or 12 bolt is more than enough for 99% of the guys on this board.

i run the moser 9" with the aluminum center section, less weight than a 12 bolt and strong as I'll ever need. 35spline axles and a spool

What are the advantages/disadvantages to running a limited slip or something like a detroit locker. I don't know a whole lot about rear ends except how to drop and install them....don't ask me to install axles or gears....I appreciate the tips guys....

you can run a spool on the street? i always though spools where for drag only cars.

Re: Ford 9" or Gm 12 Bolt??

The downside to running a locker on the street is it isn't as smooth as a posi when you are turning unless you stay off the throttle. When it 'senses' a load, it will lock up, so it can be kinda rough to drive on the street.

But... I've driven two cars with a Fnord 9" and a detroit locker - one was an '86 Firebird - and both had pretty decent street manners as far as the rear end goes. I would use one in my own car.

Re: Ford 9" or Gm 12 Bolt??

I would also look into the strange S60. I am going to get one this winter for my car. Also alot of people on LS1tech have had problems with the Mosier 12bolt and the way it has its torque arm mounted. Instead of two long bolts going trough it. It has 4 bolts that thread into the rear.

strange S60 has more problems than anything. Hope you like huge amounts of gear whine. Really the 9" is the way to go, just one gear swap and you'll be cheaper than a 12 bolt and parts are cheaper and every shop knows how to work on them.

Really. There are probably 4 people locally that have one and have zero problems.

Re: Ford 9" or Gm 12 Bolt??

My old auto tech teacher has a 64 chevy 2 nova and he has a 9inch in it.

I asked him why that instead of a 12 bolt. He told me then that if you ever had to rebuild them your self it's best to go with a 9inch.

there's complaints ALL over ls1tech about them and people complain enough to get strange to take them back as a last resort. No reason to get that heavy axle under these cars when the 9" is proven. Not to mention get a conversion u-joint and keep the stock driveshaft with a 9" instead of buying a whole new length one for the dana 60.

True. I have maybe a dumb question. I have heard that 9 inch rears have wheel hop issues. Is this true or just a dumb question.

But at least you asked. With proper suspension geometry, wheel hop will not be an issue. It may take LCRB's, an adjustable torque arm or panhard to achieve this with an aftermarket housing, but again..any upgraded rear (12bolt, 9in, S60) properly installed, wheel hop will not exist.
