Transmission confusion, please help!

I have a 88 Iroc - 5.7 with a 700r4 (with overdrive). I'm looking to pickup a transmission to rebuild, the one I have still works in the mean time but slips (I was told by 2 trans shops that it needs to be rebuilt). I have seen a trans local to me for $30 - its out of a 89 CK pickup. Will this trans work? what other years of Camaro/Trans Am's will work? Will something out of a 2.5l work? I believe I have a cable driven speedo, or at least it appears that way when I switched the dash out - please help, Im trans stupid!

thanks
Drew

Truck trannies may have longer tailshafts, atl least that is an option w/ Th-400s. Just measure them since the mount location and engine bolt pattern is the same for all non LSX small blocks.

You should be able to use any 700r4 and swap the cable driven speedo assembly in if the one you get is digital.

the tailshaft and housing are the same length on all 2wd 700r4s except the corvette. stick with the '87 and up as they have the better upgrades. one from a 2.5l will not work as the bell patterns are different. it is pretty easy to swap out speedo assemblies if you get the wrong one.

Are you saying the corvette tailshaft is a different length? I measured my corvette 700R4 and my T5 setup and both were exactly 31 inches. This leads me to believe the 700R4 in my vette is the same as the 700R4 in a fbody, with the exception of the missing crossmember mount from the vette casting.

the corvette housing is different then the f-body. same length but different mounting. as far as the shaft itself goes, i have never measured on of them because i haven't a vette unit apart, but everything i have seen lists a different shaft then the f-bodies. the actual length difference may only be a 1/4".

Ooook.. Just making sure cuz, I measured the thing like 8 freaking times before I gave the specs to the machine shop to make the Cbeam adapter for my T5 swap.. If I was off by a few (inches) i'd go nuts.

It's a different tailshaft for sure. I was under the impression you could mount a fbody tailshaft if you wanted too, but you still wouldn't get a crossmember mount point.. I don't know why they made a special V casting. When I put my 700R4 up for sale (rebuilt, transgo shift kit, MINT tranny) It took me like a month and a half to sell it because I could only sell it to a vette owner. (who wanted stiff shifts)

okay, am I correct in assuming that as long as I get a 87+ trans out of a non 4x4 V8 vehicle (305/350) I should be safe? I really dont want the hassle of not being able to use my car while the trans is out being rebuilt...plus the fact that I will have to ask a friend to help me twice.

Doubtful, but the tailshaft from the fbody could probably be used. I used to buy caprices and save fbody tail shafts off blown 700R4's to sell 'em to the fbody crowed. I could buy caprices from police deparments in the late '90s early 2000-2001 for about $500 each, and make a good $500 profit on parts.
