tranny or rear end problem

i got a 1985 camaro z28 posi 92k original miles guy who sold it to me said tranny was rebuild 2 years ago.....recently i went to palos verdes in LA i went up hill and my car lagged to go up in drive, so i dropped the gears(automatic) and it ran good.....the next day i warmed up the car and put it to drive and a pop noise came from the back...it does this when i swicth it to reverse and drive and the car moves to the side when i do that.......what could it be?

Re: tranny or rear end problem

My '87 iroc goes into gear hard when i put it in drive or reverse but the tranny in it was never rebuilt(64k orig. miles) so does my sister's '89 formula (92k)- it kinda feels like the car jumps to the side. As for the pop the first thing to check is the u-joints.

you guys may wanna check all your engine/tranny mounts, and your springs in the rear, check your torque arms bushings too.

Re: tranny or rear end problem

it does it when i but it in gear.....my friend told me to check the u joint....does it become loose in time or it was cuss i drove it to the hills......it runs good but i think that problem is killing my power....before i could burn out by just stepping on the gas now i could berly make a burn out by power braking....

I think it may kill power. My car does the jump when I put it in gear too. It has a 350 and I can't even power brake it on dry pavement .

I always assumed it was the transmission, but I never had any problems with shifting while driving so it could definitely be something else.

Re: tranny or rear end problem

The noise is most likely from excess play in the rear end, U-joints, and play within the transmission itself. The 1982-1986 transmissions did not have forward accumulators, thus the harsh neutral to drive engagement. The 1987 & up units had a much better neutral to drive engagement and the neutral to reverse engagement was softened in the 1987 & up units also.

Re: tranny or rear end problem

Yeah, what they said, and I didn't think of the torque arm before. If the bushings are sloppy or the bolts have vibrated & come loose that could explain the jump and the power loss at the same time.
