Re: saginaw 4 speed

The saginaw isn't a close ratio tranny, if we're talking about the ones that came in the early 3rd gens - They're junk.
Sounds like someone is trying to pull your leg into buying "a high performance close ratio tranny from the good ol' days of muscle cars"...

Re: saginaw 4 speed

If I found one on my property, I would pay somebody to come pick it up and haul it off to the scrap yard.

So as far as I'm concerned, their value is negative. They basically ruined a bunch of perfectly good metal by shaping it into a Saggy.

Re: saginaw 4 speed

i have had the trans for years.i had it in a c-10 truck.built 350,4:11 12 bolt rear 35-12.50 tires on 10 inch rims. i gave that truck pure hell.never had a bit of trouble with the trans.went through a couple clutches, even rung the lugs once.i guess its possible its not a saginaw.#s on case is 3925656 and all 3 levers are on the side cover.i do remember it came out of a 69 chevelle,396 375 hp.my cousin bought the car new,and wrecked it in like 6 months after getting it .trans was never changed.is there another trans that had the levers on the cover with these #s?went and looked at trans, tail housing #862254.cover #6261886,right side case#nf 0143.do these look right for a saginaw? thanks alot, jimmy

Re: saginaw 4 speed

Sounds more like a Muncie then. That'd be worth something to someone who's restoring a chevelle. Hard to put into your Trans-am if you were thinking about that.
I don't know how to cross reference those numbers, so we'll wait for someone who can...

Re: saginaw 4 speed

All 3 shift levers in side cover = Saginaw ( :barf: ); also, cast-iron case

Sounds like that's what you've got.

2 shift levers in side cover, 1 in extension housing, aluminum case, top of side cover straight with all bolts in line, 9 bolts in side cover = T-10

Shift levers and case same as T-10, top of side cover not straight with center bolt on an "ear", 7 bolts in side cover = Muncie

Re: saginaw 4 speed

From what I've seen over the years, Saginaws are kinda like T5's. I've seen some guys beat them to death with no trouble, but others go through them like underwear. A buddy of mine had one in a 72 Camaro with a mildly hopped up 350, and he managed to snap two mainshafts in a pretty short period of time. He bought the second mainshaft brand new, and I helped him put it in. I think he got about 6 months out of the new one. I remember being amazed that they broke like that. I've never seen a Muncie or a Super T10 snap a mainshaft. Saginaws are starting to be worth more these days though, since the Super T10's have gotten more expensive to come by, and the price of a good Muncie has skyrocketed. Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $200 for a Saginaw, and I'd only pay that much if it was 100% new and rebuilt.
