Need help to ID a 4speed Trans
Hey guys I have this 4 speed tranny I am planning to rebuild for my 35 chevy project. It came with a parts car I purchased, The guy told me it was a Muncie 4 speed out of a 69 GTO. I cant prove this I tried looking up all the casting numbers but no lock. If any of you can tell me what kind of tranny this is I would be very grateful. Thanks

Not a Muncie.
Not a Saginaw, and not a Warner T-10. In other words, NONE of the 4-speeds that have ever been used behind GM V8s.
Those don't look like GM part #s at all. Not Warner #s either.
Here's a thread where I posted pics of a Muncie, a Saginaw, and a T-10. They were on eBay that day; hopefully you can still look at them.

I can't tell what the bell housing is. Doesn't look like a BOP bolt pattern to me, from this point of view; but that's FAR from conclusive. More pics from other angles would help.

I'm suspecting that after 16 years, you're not likely to get an answer.
Post photos of what you've got from several angles and we'll see if we can identify it.

Saginaw 4 speed transmission were used in Chevelles, for sure. If purchased, as a example a 1970 chevelle with a 307, it was Saginaw. If you purchased a 350 ci with 250 hp, U got a Saginaw. 300 hp & up got Muncies.

Re: Need help to ID a 4speed Trans
Per the OP's post that started this thread, the "thing" he had was allegedly "out of a" 69 GTO.
His had a bell housing on it. Per my post, it wasn't a BOP pattern. Had it been a Chevy I would have told him that.
Not sure what the n00b's is since he doesn't show it, or for that matter what the OP's was since nothing comes up from the old link anymore. Not sure how n00b knows that he has the same thing the OP had.
Per my post up at the top, I had put up photos of a Saginaw, a Muncie, and a T-10 for comparison, all listed on ebay (arguably the planet's largest repository of photos of things that can be bought & sold) that particular day. None of them matched whatever the OP had. N00b could do the same thing if he wanted to, to see if whatever he has matches anything he can find there.
So, most likely not a Chevy situation. Butt I could be wrong.
Again, we haven't seen n00b's transmission, and we can't see the OP's; but if n00b thinks his looks like OP's for whyever, then it isn't a Saginaw, a Muncie, or a T-10. Maybe if he puts up a photo we can identify it. Of course, any of those can be bolted to either a BOP or a Chevy bell housing, so once it's removed from the BH, its identity as far as that, is lost. It's just a transmission at that point, unlike the OP's which was evidently still attached to a BH.

Re: Need help to ID a 4speed Trans
I would add, as far as the use of the very specific phrase "out of a [desirable vehicle]":
Back in my younger and even more foolish days (if you can even imagine me being any more foolish than I am and still surviving it), I answered an ad in the newspaper classifieds (remember them? they were like folded-up sheets of cheeeeeep paper that got yellow in about 2 days, a daily or weekly dead-tree publication usually, and people could buy a little space describing what they were selling although the cost to add a photo was outrageous, and then you could call theme on the phone to talk about it... how quaint) for a set of heads "out of a Vette". Being all n00b and starry-eyed myself at the romantic and glorious-sounding "V" word (kinda like "GTO") back then, I arranged to go check them out. I drove out to d00d's place which was kinda out in the country; he escorts me to his parts car collection, way out in his back 40; opens a door of a stripped-down Vette; and hands me 2 307 2-bbl heads... right straight "out of a Vette". I even had the evidence of my own eyes that they were "out of a Vette". In a nutshell, they represented perfectly good cast-iron that had been devalued to NEGATIVE worth, stored in ... a Vette. I politely (well, not so politely, actually) explained to him what bodily orifice he could interface with his heads "out of a Vette".
The kind of person who would buy a transmission that isn't a Saginaw, a Muncie, or a T-10, on the premise that it's "out of a 69 GTO", sounds like a prime mark for this kind of a scammer. Like I was back then. Young, inexperienced, a little too trusting, maybe even gullible. Although fortunately, had there been an Internet message board back then, my post would have been something about "can you believe what this a**hole tried to rip me off with" rather than "I just bought...". It's a real shame that there are people in the world that will treat a young person just starting out in this hobby that way, but it's true.
Still in all, we need a photo before making any kind of identification.

Re: Need help to ID a 4speed Trans
Idk if anyone cares... A search of the tailshaft number reveals that it's a new venture A833 which mid 80s in a GM would have an rpo MY6. Trans to bell had a hybrid half GM half Mopar bolt pattern. 3.08 1st and a 3rd gear modified to be an overdrive. To keep the shift sequence correct, the 3-4 shift arm was inverted.
Oh and after rereading the back post, if not Chevy bell, for all we know could be a Mopar A833...
