Exploded View of an Automatic Shifter???
Anyone know where I can find an exploded view of an automatic shifter for the stock 3rd gen. Camaro or Firebird. Are they different? I aquired a stock shifter and I'm confused on parts of the assembly. I have a plate with an attached boot that obviously fits over the shift arm. This plate also holds part of the shift indicator. It has four bolt holes but I don't see anywhere to attach this plate/boot combination to what is already installed in the photo. I need an exploded view or someone who understands my dilemma. I can take a photo of the plate/boot combo for more clarification.
Re: Exploded View of an Automatic Shifter???
Yeah, a pic of the shift plate would probably help. I know none of the thirdgen camaros with auto trans ever got a boot, except maybe the early berlinettas. I think some of the firebird models got a boot, like the GTA's. The shift plate/indicator on the camaro just bolts to the console itself, using six torx screws. Btw, that bracket with the 2 holes in it towards the bottom of the photo is where the safety neutral/reverse light switch attaches.

uhmm well the shift plate just sits on top of the upper console, and is retained to it with the four screws
the shift plate doesnt attach to the shifter assembly
what you have in the pic is the entire assembly short of the electric switch assembly that uses those two screw holes on the top of the arched piece there
good luck

Go to the dealer parts dept. with your car's VIN, and they can get you one.

Here is the boot in question. As you can see, it's more than just a boot. It contains the shift indicator, so it's not something I want to disregard. I need to mount the darn thing but haven't a clue how it goes in relation to the rest of the assembly.

Re: Exploded View of an Automatic Shifter???
I was told that it might mount from the bottom to the top plate but that's not the case. The top plate is the same as any other 3rd gen top plate I've seen. There is no provisions for mounting this. Another clue that this isn't the case is the mounting holes. Notice how the screw holes are recessed with a smaller hole in the center indicating that it must mount from the top onto something. What is that something?!?!
If I can't figure this out, I may have to purchase a top plate assembly specifically for my model and year.....1988 RS.

Re: Exploded View of an Automatic Shifter???
Yeah, that's definitely not a thirdgen camaro shift plate. Whatever it came out of, it looks like there's supposed to be another trim/cover plate that goes over the top of the piece you have. It looks to be a GM piece, but definitely not thirdgen camaro. The auto plates are easy to find dirt cheap, so just get one somewhere and you'll be all set.

Re: Exploded View of an Automatic Shifter???
That IS a thirdgen part, and a fairly rare one.
You are looking at an automatic shifter from a firebird console. 1985+ i beleive. My car is a 1987.
It is rare, because usually the firebirds dont have the selector indicator shown. It just says PRNDD12. But yours also has the indicators next to it. There are 2 seperate console covers for this (i beleive). Here is a thread covering the topic with lots of pix. And a pic of my car.
EDIT: I have to search a bit more for the thread, it was covered in excellent detail. But Heres some pix in this thread anyway.

Re: Exploded View of an Automatic Shifter???
That makes sense. I figured it might be a pontiac thing. The only way you'd ever see an auto equipped, thirdgen Camaro plate with a boot is if you fabbed it up yourself.

YOu can make it just fit, you just need the other 3 peices. Console, console lid, and shifter plate from a firebird.

After seeing the picture of it in that car dude you have GOT to figure out how to make that thing work. It would look REAL slick!

Agreed....it is very cool. Unfortunetly, what I have is a small part of a larger puzzle. If online 70 is accurate, I've got more to round up and the parts availability appears to be pretty scarce.

Re: Exploded View of an Automatic Shifter???
The parts shouldnt be scarce, you can get the console for sure at a junk yard, its just the shifter plate. Im not 100% sure, but i beleive its different from the usual firebird one, because it has to accomodate the larger width of the indicator lights.
I have a complete assembly for $30 + shipping for a camaro if your interested. Everything right up to the shifter linkage. You just need the camaro console to go with it. But the shifter assembly will work on its own with the indicator lights.

I already have the stock 1988 RS console. I just need the Center Console Plate that is necessary to complete the transition. Can you send a picture to
