Re: Has Anyone tried one of these new tremec transmissions?

Yes, I have the TKO 600 in my car, like it so far. I'd recommend getting it from a place like Forte's though, he has the needed "adapter" pieces for it to fit in a thirdgen. Also, the spohn crossmember is a must. I didn't care for the stock shifter, so I have a Pro 5.0 on it now and its great. The driveshaft will need a different slip yoke and might have to be shortened. Other than that, it seems to be a pretty good tranny so far. I'll let you know if it lives up to the "600" name. hahaha.

Re: Has Anyone tried one of these new tremec transmissions?

I bought my tko600 from fortes, no complaints with them, just dont try to e-mail them, they never answer it. and dont get his offset shifter to relocate it back 2", it bunches up on the rubber boot and pops the trans out of 2nd and 4th. Didnt have to shorten my driveshaft.

I would go with fortes over jegs, he has all the conversion parts.

well i see this

t5 replacement, the jegs link has no t5 replacement, just the tko trans. Yes is a gm style trans, but its not setup for the f-body, you still need an adapter to bolt it up to the stock bell housing, and i dont believe jegs sell it. that all i was getting at

the tko is a great trans, a t56 can be made a lot stronger, but its also more expensive and heavier

the T5 is a vulnerable trans any way you cut it. If you do a search, you'll find many reasons not to waste your money on "upgrades" for it.

The TKO's are tought trans, but a bit notchy shifting(require clutching). - They do offer a build to order TKO 900, which is tougher than most T56's, except maybe tranzilla which is $8000. - I've heard of a supposed "pro shifted" TKO which can be shifted clutchless....

the stock t5 is mounted to the bellhousing rotated like 18 degrees or something, the TKO is made to mount straight up. You could get a Lakewood bellhousing which allows you to mount GM transmissions straight up, but the TKO is not a GM trans, its use by ford, so the pattern is different. Forte's sell his with an aluminum adapter, 1" thick, which bolts to the stock, or lakewood bellhousing, and adapts to the right bolt pattern and puts the trans in the straight up position.

I will agree with shagwell, you need to use the clutch to shift, no power shifting, but IMO the clutch is there for a reason right? And the G-force trans is a waste of money.

Never heard of the TKO 900, sounds like a beast

Re: Has Anyone tried one of these new tremec transmissions?

Why bother? They are fragile and barley hold up to a stock 305. People have given you plenty of 5 spd options here. All it requires is an adapter plate. You will still have a 5spd with the shifter coming out of the center console. The difference being that it won't break and you gan get on your car when you want/need to do so and that it isn't turned at an angle when you look under the car.

I don't see the point in wanting to keep a crappy tranny.

Re: Has Anyone tried one of these new tremec transmissions?

i looked at an install and it doesnt sit where the stock shifter does, you have to modify crap to make it work, if there isnt a true replacement then ill stick with what i got. I dont want to have to monkey **** around with stuff to get it to work

Re: Has Anyone tried one of these new tremec transmissions?

I just wish i didnt have to do any mods, i want to take out my old transmission and bolt the new one up, i like old style linkage, i like using the stock bell housing and not having to move the shifter, i hate large modifications.

TKO's can be had with umpteen million shifter locations, I can't see having to move anything there. As for the bellhousing, IMO, I won't run a stocker in anything. I've blown a couple clutches and I like walking. SFI all the way. - BTW, I have a mechanical clutch, but mine is custom, nothing like the factory stuff. 3200# roller assist borg&beck pressure plate won't have anything to do with fatory linkage or hyd stuff.
----------
//<86TA>\\ - yep, the clutch is there for a reason....staging and shut down....other uses of it just slows you down.

I love it when someone gives a direct, no answer! Btw, another reason it's important to get the Fortes 3rd gen TKO is the fact that they put a longer input shaft in them due to the 1" thick adapter plate. The only thing the shifter on my TKO required to fit in the proper position in the console was a simple, flat piece of steel with two sets of holes drilled in it so you can move the stick back about 2 inches.

lol

You could also STOP looking at the TKO. IIRC, a Richmond 5 spd should drop right in. You will however need a Lakewood bellhousing and a Long shifter kit. The shifter kit includes a transmission crossmember mount and torque arm bracket so that nothing else has to be changed.

You have to pay to play regardless if it is longevity or racing.
