posi 4th gen rear?

alright guys. im thinking of heading out to the auto wrecks and look for a 4th gen posi rear end. how do you tell if its a posi or not?? and how do you figure out what the gearing are in them as well??
and last question. how much would you pay for a 4th gen rear from the wreckers?? just trying to figure out cost wise. my guess is $250.

Re: posi 4th gen rear?

All the V8 4th gen Camaros had a posi; The LS1 rears use a Zexel Torsion posi, which looks different than the clutch type posi; the Zexel uses gears instead of clutches. I'd try to get an LS1 if at all possible. Go for a 3-channel rear, you'll know it's three channel because the brake line from the master will go to a T-block on the axle. If you get one from an auto LS1, it'll probably be 3.23, the manual trans will have 3.42. You can be sure what gears it has by popping the differential cover off, rotating the wheel until you can see a ratio stamped on the ring gear. Just divide the bigger number by the smaller number. For example, a 3.23 ring gear will have 13:42 stamped on it, a 3.42 will have 12:41 stamped on it. If you shop around you should be able to get an LS1 rear with brakes for $250-ish.

Re: posi 4th gen rear?

They're an article in the Tech Articles section on the TGO homepage. It's more or less a bolt in, nothing too difficult.

From what I hear, its a direct bolt in, but it is 1.75'' wider on each side, so your tires will stick out more. That is the reason I decided not to go that route, but if you don't mind the extra width, sounds like a good way to go.

Re: posi 4th gen rear?

what are the stock size tires? i got 235s on the back on a set of 15inch rims. i believe the rims are 9" or 10" wide.
if they stick out alittle more. and it fits under the rear fender. im sure you get different backspacing. im planning on getting a set of new rims eventurally anyways. gunna stick the widest tires i can stick on the back.
how much can the 4th gen rear handle? could it handle 11s in the quarter mile?

Re: posi 4th gen rear?

Here's a 4th gen rear under a Camaro, with the stock rear wheels & 245 tires sizes. The fit is great!

It'll depend on your backspacing, as to where they end up, but you can look at where they are now, and just add 1.75", to see where they'll end up.

Re: posi 4th gen rear?

ok well its 7:30am and its abit dark out still but i took some photos of the rear end of my car to show you how much they stick out already. im sure they will still fit under the fenders. but here are some photos

it looks like it would be a tight fit.

missing the center cap and the tire needs air! gotta get on that.

Re: posi 4th gen rear?

Just thought I would throw this in. I bought a rear axle off ebay the other week out of a 99 TA and it has 3.42s and the brake lines and everything for about 350. I went to many junk yards in my area and they all wanted about 550-600 for all of theirs. And some of them were out of 1994s and 1995s and they were in pretty poor condition.

Re: posi 4th gen rear?

Well the one I found was only like 2 hours from my house, so I picked it up. With shipping it would be like 150 to 200 more. I shopped around until I found one that I liked that was close. It saved me money and most people prefer pick up anyways.

Re: posi 4th gen rear?

question if i put a forth gen rear in my car will it effect the panhard bar , lower control arms, and the the torque arm.
will it effect maybe the mounting points being different from the third gen rear.

to check the gear ratios all i have to do is check for the stamp on one of the gears?

even all of the 4th gen rear lt1's came posi. or was it all of the 4th gen ls1's?

my friends keep telling me that the back spacing is different and i cant use my iroc rims? is this true?

DIRECT bolt-in. Driveshaft, panhard, shocks, LCAs...

The only difference is the overall width, and the extra width is outside the LCA mounts.

Or rotate the tire, watching the pinion DS mount, and count. Then won't hafta open it up, and you can check it at the junkyard.

Posi vs non-posi, I have no clue, but that is easily checked if it if off the ground.

Re: posi 4th gen rear?

All of the mounting features are identical.

AFAIK yes the LT1 cars all came with posi; but it was just an Auburn. Not anything worth paying money to get. The LS1 cars came with the Zexel, an altogether better unit.

Yes the offset or backspacing of the wheels, whichever you want to measure by, is different. 4th gen rear + 4th gen wheels = identical to 3rd gen rear + 3rd gen wheels.

Your friends are only partially right. You can in fact just jam your 3rd gen wheels onto the 4th gen rear in your car. It will look hella stupid and poseur however; you'll have these little weenie stock wheels all stuck out past the fender, make it look like a motorcycle sidecar or something. Yerbasic comical r¡cer "skateboard" effect, like you used to see a few years ago when the young children would put deep-dish RWD wheels on their FWD cars, and the wheels would be way outside the car. People will laugh. Yuck. It'd almost look somewhat for-real if you had 11" wheels or something; but put little skinny 7" or 8" ones on there with that much space behind them, it just looks ridiculous.

Don't listen to that...STOCK 16" sheels, with 245/255s, DO NOT stick out past the fenders....As seen in the pics [URL="https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/posts/transmissions-drivetrain/454060-posi-4th-gen-rear/3580714-post8.html"]here[/URL .

If you Remote Host your pics, like I do in Photobucket, you can post all the pics you want. Hosting 3 pics on TGO is the limit, not really on how many pics you can post.

Re: posi 4th gen rear?

so ill just get a wider rim
You could do that; just make sure you get them with the correct backspacing for a 4th gen or a C5 (same amount), NOT a 3rd gen. To put it in perspective, I have stock 18" C5 wheels on my car, with a 3rd gen rear; with a 2" spacer, they clear the unmodifiable place in the wheel well at the front of the LCA by about ½", and are just inside the fenders on the outside. They FILL UP the wheel wells, to the max: no daylight anywhere. The same wheels on a 4th gen rear would be about ¼" inward from where mine are, which would also be about perfect.
