Clutch for a Mark V

I need help finding an 11 inch clutch for a Mark V 454. Either that, or would a clutch for a Mark IV work also?? The only 11 inch clutch for the Mark V I could find was on summit, and they wanted over $800 for it. I'm not really looking forward to paying that much, I was hoping I could find one for under $300.

Re: Clutch for a Mark V

Do you have a bellhousing that'll fit that big of a clutch first off? Typically 3rd gens have a tough time fitting those in there.

Well if not, it shouldn't be a problem finding one. Even a 10.4 inch is fine if I can find one.

Re: Clutch for a Mark V

Shouldn't an 11 inch or 10.4 or w.e size clutch i end up using bolt up to the flywheel if the flywheel will accept that size clutch reguardless of if the clutch is for a Mark V or Mark IV??

Right, I keep forgetting to reply to this.
You just need a flywheel that'll mate up to a BBC crankshaft. I'm not sure how you've got the engine balanced, I don't know squat about BBC stuff.

sounds like it'd work. There's a few there for under $300.

You'll need the bellhousing that can accept that big of a flywheel. I think lakewood makes one, $500. What tranny are you going to use?

Then any clutch that'll bolt up to a 168 tooth flywheel should work fine.
Here's a few that spec to mate up to a MarkV engine

Re: Clutch for a Mark V

In your opinion Sonix, do you think it would make more sense to just forget the weak saginaw and throw in a built 700r4(With warranty, and good for up to about 500 horse)?

Re: Clutch for a Mark V

In my opinion? Yea, i'd ditch the saginaw, but I wouldn't go to a 700R4. Personally I like to shift, especially a torquey big block, that'd be tons of fun.

I'd look for a super T-10, or a T-56, or a TKO500/600.

Re: Clutch for a Mark V

I love to shift too, but I've only got about $750 i could put towards a tranny. If I went manual it would have to include everything to make my car run(Bellhousing, clutch, tranny, and flywheel). So unless I can find a hell of a deal, I think I'm gonna be stuck with an auto...

BTW, a 700r4 that is meant for a 5.0 or a 5.7 will fit a 454 right??

Re: Clutch for a Mark V

A 700r4 will bolt right up to a 454 motor. OMG, a Saginaw behind a 454? You might as well throw a T5 behind it. Saginaws usually don't even last behind a fairly tame small block motor. If your 454 is from the 70's era, they're externally balanced, so you'll need a flywheel (manual trans) or flexplate (auto trans) that's externally balanced. A 700r4 will need to be pretty beefed up to last behind a BBC, same goes for a TH350. Usually the best candidates for a BBC would be either a TH400 or a Super T10. If you want to have an overdrive, a Tremec TKO, T56, or the built 700r4 would be the way to go.

Re: Clutch for a Mark V

Alright, cool. The 700r should be good for over 500 horse. I'm pushing like half of that, but hopefully with like at least 350 ft. lbs of torque.

Hell a stock 454 should put out 350 ft. lbs. of torque.
